How long does it take for a single Commodore to be manufactured at the factory

Hi all, With the start of my new VF SSV Redline Ute build getting closer (5th July) Was just wondering approximately how long it takes for a VF Commodore to be made. From the very beginning, to the very end. And driven off line and out of the factory.

From my memory of working on Holden's computer systems in the early 90s (so may not be relevant now) the actual build process is only a matter of days eg 3 - 5??? However, there are lots of processes and functions that need to take place first, so it can take many weeks just to reach checkpoint 1 which I think is the start of the build.

When i worked there .... the original VB Commodore used to spend 37-40 hours 'on line' .. from assembly of the panels into a jig for welding
thru to driving it out into the paddock for storage . The base 6 cyclinder L model obviously taking less time than the up-spec SL/E

These days..??? the painting process is longer but I would imagine with all the automation (robots and material handling gear)
the assembly process once the body has come out of the paint shop should be quicker but of course there were no airbags
and the other electronic doodads (eg HUD) in 1978. My guess would be still around 40 hours...

Typically FWD cars are at 18 hours these days.
RWD in a older plant add another 8-10 hours any more and the plant is inefficient.
If the Commodore line time is greater than 28 hours than it may be a factor why the plant is closing.

Why ? These days much more use of suppliers to provide sequenced complete major assemblies.
This helps reduce the line assembly hours on the final assembly line.
Also many parts are made to be assembled more easily than ever before - however not so easy / quick to pull apart should service or collision damage need to be repaired.

Thanks guys. I'm starting to get excited about my first new Holden purchase. Phantom Black SSV Redline Utility. 6.2, 6 speed.
Dealer tells me that its due to start its journey down the line on the 5th of July, and land at the dealership here in Bundaberg on the 18th of July.

It's the paint shop that takes the most time. Generally the body manufacturing will take around 1 day, the paint shop 3 days and the final assembly around 1 day. There was a short video Holden put out a few years ago of part of the production line that may interest you as below. Also one called "Steel to Road" which has more detail. Goes back to 2013 but still interesting.

Re: How long does it take for a single Commodore to be manufactured at the factory

Well, my ute in some form of assembly / completion will be in the factory somewhere at this stage. It was supposed to start getting built on the 5th. How many days a week does the factory work for? Mon - Fri or Mon - Sat? etc?
