    VF2 Redline exhaust mods

    hey guys,

Haven't been on the forum for quite some time, but need some advice for my redline and couldn't think of a better place! Picked up a redline a few months ago, and recently replaced the mid section of exhaust with a 2.5" system. Was hoping it would be louder/deeper, but it hasn't really had the desired affect.

Kept the stock rear mufflers on, but thinking I might need to replace those. I don't want any drone though.

So, what's my best option from here? bite the bullet and get a reputable 3" cat back system, or have the sports mufflers from the 2.5" system fitted? Seems like the stock mufflers are the major restriction when it comes to volume.

As much as i'd love to go all out and do full exhaust, tune, cams etc... I won't be (at this stage), famous last words.... I have a GT 335 that is ballistic enough

For those with 2.5" systems, are you happy with the change over stock system? I must admit, the stock system is one of the nicest sounding exhausts I've heard. I'm assuming a 3" system is more likely to drone over a 2.5?

    Any advice welcome!

    Cheers,
    Jimmy

I would say if you ARE NOT going cam or FI in the future stick with a reputable 2.5" system.

Have you done anything about the bimodal? Otherwise it be be open at idle then closed until 3000RPM making it a lot quieter. Turn the car on, set it to open then pull the fuse/relay so it can't shut again. See if you like it...most people say there's no increase in drone with them permanently open.

Otherwise a catback twin system from DiFilippo or Manta are no brainers. Good sounding with no drone. I prefer the note a 3" system gives and I wouldn't say you get more drone with it.

I highly doubt I'll ever cam it... but, never say never...

I pulled the relay for the bi modal as soon as I got it home haha.

The new mid section is noticeably louder in the cabin, I wouldn't say it drones but it's certainly louder. Makes me worry that changing rear mufflers will drone. I wonder if I can purchase manta rear mufflers on their own...

Unless I just keep it as is for now, and see how I go with any future mods down the track. Can't go too hectic, as it's the wife's daily...

I thought changing mid section would give me the result I was after, I changed my middle muffler to a magnaflow on my Y62 patrol and it made a massive difference. Was sort of hoping the SS would be similar... In hindsight, I should have just gone a full manta or di Filippo cat back straight away.

Change system, I did headers cats with standard system and sounded average, kpm 3" system and sweet deep note and tuned the horrible Holden pop crackles out

BlackVE - any drone/boom with KPM system? have the header back system on my GT and there's noticeable drone/boom, but only for like 200-300rpm. Not really any issue, as it's not as though I sit in that rev range often. Any drone/boom and it'll be an issue as the daily for the wife.

KPM is so damn exxy though.... trying to get out of this cheap lol.

Had a close look at my bi modal rear cans & they appear to have perforations prior to the valves. I think this is a cause of unwanted crackle & pop!

I actually don't mind the crackle and pop on downshift, but I know not everyone likes it.

Pacemaker Tuned Headers with high flow cats into 3" Manta twin stainless steel cat back is what i have on my VF2 Redline. Sounds bloody nice cruising and even better under full song. Jump on Facebook mate and join up to the group "Club VF Australia". Alot of guys on there have stock system but just change a mid pipe and makes it loud etc, cant remember what they are called

I've had 3 KPM 3" full systems and all are/were great!! The SLC system on the Senator was on the car when I bought it and still sounds good (I've had a number of people ask what it was so they could buy) but IMO not quite as nice as the genuine KPM/Exhaust Technology non SLC systems. All on A6s (SSV sedan, SSV ute and now the Senator) - all no drone.

    Re: VF2 Redline exhaust mods

    Thanks guys -

I've been looking for a second hand manta/KPM or Di Filippo, but they're not very common on the second hand market!

Lasoya - I just requested to join that page, i'll have a search and see what I can find. I guess I assumed that removing the centre muffler and replacing with 2.5' system with hotdogs would make a bigger change to the note than it actually did.

Wonky - thanks for the info mate, good to hear that no drone on the KPM systems. I have a the KPM header back on my GT335 and there is a touch of drone, but not too bad. Hence, why I was a little nervous forking out so much on a KPM for the Redline. I'll keep an eye out for a reputable second hand system in the mean time.

Videos of my full KPM 3" with A6

The most it "droned" was up a slight rise on the Monash Fwy outbound just after Warrigal Rd - here's a clip.

Another clip showing how loud under full acceleration but how quiet cruising - plenty more samples if you want to PM me.

Get headers, hi flow cats (perhaps an OTR) & a tune as well Jimmy.

I reckon it's well worth the extra coin.
