    my licence arrived in the early 70s... most have been wagons

    I had a VL Exec wagon - with the 6 cyl Nissan engine + 4 speed auto. For it's time, it was a pretty good package. That silky smooth engine & transmission combo was fantastic !

    Had an Amberley Blue EH wags it had the smaller 161 originally, then put the later 186 in her.

    EHs had small 149 and the larger 179 red motor in 'em
    (as did HDs)

    161s and 186s did not appear until HR


    nothing to prevent the larger 161 replacing the mighty 149 in an EH mind you....
    they were a straight swap

    That's correct as by the time I bought the EH it already had a reco exchanged motor fitted hence it got the latter 161. I then fitted up the 186.
