Snapped Rear Sway Bar MK6 Golf

Has anyone ever heard of this happening or had it happen to any of their vehicles? Had the daughter's Golf in for service this morning and when I picked it up was handed about a quarter of the rear sway bar lol. I has just snapped. Looks like I will have to go shopping for some aftermarket F+R bars.

I would have thought they would have been made out of a decent quality spring steel?

I just used & found a few other VW's with the same issues.....

Yes, agree. They are hollow, but snapping in half, never seen or heard of it. Might take it in to Solitaire and see what they say.

Unexpected but possibly due to poor heat treatment of the batch. Maybe!!

Without the back bar, the car will under-steer more. Suggest you replace with like (OEM) OR replace both front and back (aftermarket) to keep the original cars balance.

Hollow bar is fine for this application. Restistance to torsion and bending is determined by area moment of inertia which is diameter to the 4th power, that is diamaeter squared squared. I am fitting a Watts link to our project Escort and I was going to make it adjustable since the donor AU XR6 is wider across the mounting points. Links are 19 OD and 11.4 ID. Equivalent solid bar is just over 18 diameter which is 2.5x heavier per metre. Makes good sense as long as the bar is manufactured properly. So I am just going to cut and joint the links.

Had a chat with Michael at Pedders Prospect (he did the Coilovers on my Calais), and he has recommended that we leave the stock front bar in place and put a whiteline bar in the rear. He believes this is the happy medium for these cars and will sharpen it up nicely. According to his advice, going a bigger bar in the front will make it very unpleasant to drive on Adelaide's roads. So that is what we are doing
