oh yeah.....
in 62 or 63 one of my aunts (my fathers younger sister) bought a double story place between
the main road and the beach at Cascade Gardens (between Broadbeach and Surfers) and then
Dad got a new company car .. EJ Special sedan. 1964 I think. And to run it in, the whole famiily
loaded it up and drove up for Christmas.
Absolutely terrible trip... vinyl seats, no aircon, stinking hot, abysmal handling and shite roads
the car was a vomitorium , I was about 9 or 10 the younger brother about 6, we both get car sick
and the baby youngest brother was 5-6 months and was still on the boob. The smell ...
THREE long days.. and finally there. Got sunburnt, saw lots of blonde girls in polka dot hanky
bikinis and Mum was telling Dad NOT to stare at the new meter maids in Surfers. Tried surfing
.. could not with a board, but got shown by an old wizened surfie (smoked some real weird sh#t!)
how to body surf. And still can.... have the board shorts always when we go away just in case
At Christmas, Dad drank too much beer (it was 110° and 90% humidity).. plus it was bloody XXXX
and have never seen someone chuck so much (until I did on my 18th but I blame the Ouzo)
Mum was not impressed...
Great memories ... well yeah some of them![]()

Lol!!...I have "different" memories of the Gold Coast in that era.
We arrived from England in 1958, & as was our habit, & that of many English people, they liked to have a yearly holiday "at the seaside", many English people not living near the sea, so "to see the sea" was quite a big event for some. I can remember my sister & I, arriving at the seaside, competing as to who would be the first one to "see the sea"!
So Dad decided to have our fist holiday in Aus at the Gold Coast. But the Aussie sun is a bit different to that in England, just a "bit" more intense. So I'm running around on the beach (I was 14) having a great time, BUT, not so good at the end of the day,....3rd degree burns all over my shoulders & back (massive blisters),...very painful, required the doctor etc,....so yes my first visit to the Gold Coast was not too flash either. I think the only "Hi Rise" at the time was the 6 or 7 story "Lennons Broadbeach"!
Martin.
Mark Parsons TR7 V8...
I remembered seeing this car at Targa Tasmania years ago on the Wide World Of Sports on the Cathode-ray tube, and have never forgotten it.
Here is the Mark Parsons TR7 V8 at Targa Tasmania in 1997...
Unforgettable...
