Yes many astronauts had Corvettes, they had a few special paint jobs done for some of them also.

GM, at one stage did a special lease deal for them as an advertising promotion where they had to pay $1.00 per year lease for a brand new Corvette.

I remember that car very well, a sensational racecar, subsequently restored by Myles Johnson.
I particularly remember the ZL1 after Bob couldn't run the 427 any more, so He installed a 350 in line with current Aussie regs, '72 or '73, I can't remember. (Smitty, you would probably know more about the "regs" than me!)
Anyway Bob had the 350 in the car for Calder, & Marvin was, as usual, running his Phase 111 Falcon. I just happened to be in the pits & checking out the Camaro, when Moff sauntered over, & crouched down with a tape measure to measure the front track. Anyway, Bob's mechanic (getting old, can't remember his name!) noticed what Moff was doing, so walked past him, gave him "nudge" as He walked by, knocking Moff over!
    The Camaro was subsequently disqualified.
Marvin was always at a power disadvantage in his famous Trans against the ZL1 (a beautifully built car, & one of my favorites!), & I've alaways thought that it was a mark of what a great car was the Trans Am, & how well Marvin drove it.
I actually bumped into Myles after the Camaro restoration, & He offered to lend me one of his books on the Canaro ZL1, a very special "limited print" publication, detailing all of the ZL1s by Vin, & also detailing all the special parts, by part number. Myles is a very interesting character indeed, having been involved with many interesting projects.
    Great days.

The memory's come good,.....the name of Jane's mechanic who "bumped" Moff was Pat Purcell!
