VZ LS VCM532 - What valve springs, Single Beehive or Dual?

    Hi all,

Been a while since I posted here, so here goes.

I've got a 2005 VZ Adventra V8. So far, it's got HSV headers and HSV cats, along with full twin 2.5" Manta catback. Also aluminium OTR.
Other non performance mods, 4" lift, A/T tyres, HSV brakes, VE Calais 18" wheels.

There's been a sticky lifter that been giving me the willys on and off since I purchased it, around 5 years ago.

It's finally time to do them, along with a cam swap, so I'm just after help with what else I should be changing, mainly, what valve springs?

I've decided on the VCM532 as it's a daily driver/weekend getaway, and don't need huge power, just a bit more down low-mid range.

So, what do people recommend? Dual PAC 1905 with 650" lift? Or PAC 1511X Single Beehive?

I'll be getting the obvious LS7 lifters with buckets, also Melling 10% Oil Pump, Rollmaster Single Row Timing Chain, full gasket kit, Oil belling

    Am I missing anything?

    Cheers for any help.

    Callan

I would go the single 1219 beehives because they are good for up to 625 lift & the VCM532 only has 583 lift.

They will be fine for the job, less load on everything else in the valvetrain and quieter running than the duals.

I have had them in mine for a few years with a slightly bigger lift cam & a Harrop HTV2300 supercharger without any problems.

Absolutely fantastic mate. Just the info I needed. There's so much crap out there to buy, but every build is different so it's hard to find something specific for what I wanna use it for.

Do you think the added security of the dual springs in case of breakage is redundant?

I can't see any added security from having dual springs,

AFAIK the inner springs are really only used as dampers.

In my opinion the beehives would be safer (long term) because they will give less strain on the valve train

& I imagine you would be less likely to have wear & problems because of that.

As I said, the PAC1219 spring is good for 625 lift which is much more than that VCM camshaft needs.

Crankshaft, head bolts are TTY, so either a new GM or a ARP.

The 1219 will be fine, that camshaft is very mild. The main difference between the 1219 and 1511X is open pressure and spring rate. If you had a nice set of heads and wanted to let it rev a little more, you would choose the 1511X. As for duals vs singles, I've used both. Coincidentally I've broken more doubles than singles. The camshaft style you want doesn't justify doubles in any way.

Of note, I think that LSA is a little wide for what you might ultimately want, especially in an Adventra. You could look at the BTR Truck Norris range for that more urgent style torque delivery.

I ran 1219 springs with my CamMotion cam. However , I've also had 2 major shops in Sydney refuse to fit single springs to my .600 lift cams, dual springs only. I'm currently running the duals after removing the 1219s and selling them. Can't say I noticed any difference valve train wise.

Thanks for the heads up about the Truck Norris cam. I'll check it out 👌

I've priced up the proper TTY bolts etc just waiting til I pull the heads to get the pushrods measured up as well

You'll measure the pushrod length once its back together. Lifters will be bled down etc factory length is 7.400 and will more than likely be correct with the style of cam you're looking at.

Comp Cams do a pushrod length checker CO7702-1 which is what I use. It has the measurements on it, but I usually stick a set of verniers against it.

I like to degree my cams, 1) it tells me the cam I've asked for is the one I've got and b) gives me the option to advance or retard it as required. In saying that, 99% of the time dot-to-dot will get you pretty close. I've only had one camshaft that has been wrong (or wrong cam in the wrong box type deal).

If you've got money to burn, I like the BTR shaft rockers. Not required at all, but I put them in all my engines now that are not more exotic valvetrains.
