I read somewhere that most high level GM execs are encouraged to retire at 65 or so:

I don't think there is anything negative about Mike's move. Seems like a personal choice for family and lifestyle reasons.

2 guys I worked with at the Bend .. Dave Venticich (who ended up Director - Sales & Marketing GM Middle East)
and Kevin Wale (ending up as President/Chairman GM China) both retired before 60. Their choice...
Kevin after 37 years with GM (somewhere) and Dave after 35 years (he finished after assisting on VE here)

Yes, my ex wife's uncle worked at GMH all his working life & loved it there.

He started as an apprentice fitter, ended in a senior R & D role & I remember him being unhappy that he to retire.

Poor bugger, it was his life, he was pulling his hair out at the idea of being stuck at home with his wife & he did not live a long time after that.

He was a top bloke, a great car guy.

.. an addendum to that post (just to finish)
Dave came home to Melbourne after leaving GM but his Mum died a few years after that. He then retired to his holiday condo in Florida
(which he had bought when working in Detroit) and Kevin.. back here in Melbourne and I see him now and then at the ex Holden employees
lunches held several times each year

I think that unless we should have divorced the wrong woman years ago,

we should retire & enjoy life as soon as possible.
