    Global economy - affect upon Australian motorsport

    Does anybody think sponsor money will start to disappear in the next few years causing teams to fold and categories to be seriously affected? Motorsport is not to immune to the cash crisis currently affecting the financial industry.

    its possible i spose...

    Could get us back to the days of spending $60k on the latest model SS or XR8 and racing that as opposed to what we have now?

    I second Seldo, Manchester United is (or maybe was, now) sponsered by AIG, The American insurance company that was bailed out by the US government. If it can happen to Man U, it will filter all the way down. Remember, a lot of support comes from Self-Made types who use sponsership as means of tax deducting their hobby. As they say, If you want to make a small fortune in motor racing, start with a big fortune! Unfortunantly now, those big fortunes are shrinking and money on frivolities is disappearing.

    Cheers, Matthew

    It's definitely a possibility, but there are always going to be companies making big money, even in bad times. All comes down to where the marketing/advertising side of said companies want to spend their money...

    First examples - Wright Patton Shakespeare V8SC team - gone - Ford Aust with-drawing $$$ support from all Ford teams except FPR and SBR, TKR looking very shaky, DJR looking very shaky....

    I hear this morning that a lot of big name sponsors are withdrawing from the Melbourne Cup, so if it's hitting the Cup, it'll definately hit Motorsport in some way.

    The other thing to remember is that in the 1990-92 recession, Tobacco sponsership was still legal (I'm not condoning it, just pointing it out) and it was a bedrock of many sports when it came to sponsership. By it's nature Tobacco sales are near recession proof so the funds still flowed in sponsership.Think of the race teams that were sponsered by Tobacco firms compared to now, Winfield, Peter Jackson, B&H etc etc. V8 Supercars are going to be a bit thin on the ground next year.

    Should be a good year for 2 teams next year then. Larry Perkins = jack daniels
    DJR = Jim Beam.
    It's happened before, It will all happen again.

    with the current KFC Controversy and the "Sport and Fast Food is BAD" campaign, all V8's will be gone because it will promote hoon driving, so the sport(and all motorsport) will have to go in the name of protecting the people.
