Thanks for the comments guys. Yep, my aim is to have something unique that most people think looks neat and attractive but without going over the top. Something that won't go catching the eyes of police unless they look at it twice and hopefully not even then.

Had the 3.45 diff fitted Sat instead of the stock 2.92. Certainly wakes it up a bit but haven't really had chance to fully try it out.

Bang for your buck it may be better for us auto owners to pick up a 3.45 diff from a manual owner who has upgraded to a HSV 3.7

I don't know what the 'average' price for a good second hand 3.45 is as I have seen quite a few priced around $500 to $600 and the odd one advertised for $800. Not sure if that means the $800 is overpriced or not.

Anyone got an idea of a reasonable price for a good second hand 3.45

Gary could you let us know after a while how much your fuel consumption has changed and any other observations / feedback you have.

I'd also be interested to know the RPM when doing 60, 80, 100 and 110 km/h with the auto set in sports mode as that is what I use unless I drive it as a manual. I find I never just use drive anymore as it feels so much nicer in sports mode. Anyone else notice this and do the same

Nice to see she's found her home Gary, I must admit i was a little sceptical about going from 3.45 to 3.7 but awsome mod(in cammed car even better) but from 2.92 to 3.45 would even be better

Hi Tony,

From what I've heard/read 3.7s are definitely no good for an A6 as make 1st gear far too short. In fact I've read from guys who've tried various ratios that for track times 3.27 is the go for an A6, as HSV use. Given my car may only see the track once or twice per year and I happened to find a near new 3.45 at a good price for sale on here courtesy of BLUEVE I figured I'd give it a try and see how it went.

I reckon $800 is waaaaay over the top for a used 3.45. Put it this way - when I saw this one it had already been on sale for at least 2 or 3 days when I PM'd Paul about it, expecting it to have already been spoken for. I wasn't in a rush for a diff as didn't know then what the hardlid actuators and fitting plus OTR and tune was going to cost me, so didn't really know whether I had enough money for a diff at that stage. It was at least another three days before I finally decided to bite the bullet, so a 1,800km old (i.e. virtually new) diff advertised for $500 didn't go in all that time!! He'd had a few guys sniffing around but nobody was prepared to put their money down. I figured it was a fair price so paid the advertised amount.

I can try to get the rpm figures you require but it's easy for you to work out a close approximation idea. 3.45/2.92 = 1.182 or just a bit under 1.2, so take your revs with your current diff and add one fifth of that and that's slightly over what you'd be doing with the 3.45s. At 100kmh with the 2.92 my revs were just over 1500. One fifth of that is 300 and with the 3.45s I'm running at just under 1800rpm. I can certainly hear/feel the difference with my loud exhaust even though there's no drone.

Based on my experience with my VZ SS where I went from 3.08 to 3.46 I don't expect my fuel economy to change much, even on the highway because you are not working against such a long gear to get the car going and keep it going. In fact overall with a mix of highway/city driving I found that to be slightly better overall on economy!

Thanks Steve - when I have it sent down to me I want to try an LS3 cam next. As long as it adds about 20rwkw and plenty of torque I'll be happy because that will be enough for me and won't require springs, rods, or worse still with the L76, lifters (I hope!).

have you much info on the LS3 cam going into the L76 Wonky? I was looking at this option when i first picked up my ute in march, but was told that it couldnt be done so ive been looking around ever since.

I guess it's a case of anything can be done at a cost Ben. The whole idea of only going LS3 was that being a relatively small cam I was hoping it could be done as just a cam only change involving no need for springs and rods and most importantly lifters which requires the heads to come off. People have certainly put LS2/3 cams in L98s and picked up an easy 20rwkw and heaps of torque and I know Swingtan has put a bigger cam in his VZ L76 which I believe has all the same lifters etc, just that AFM is not actuated. I don't believe even he changed the lifters for it, in which case we should be OK. I'll have a talk with him when I have a chance.

Who told you it couldn't be done? If a dealer I'd be tempted to ignore them. I know the Americans have done a lot of L76 cam changes so that's the place to go for the most info.

Very similar to my thoughts. If I can get a low km 3.45 LSD in as new condition for around the $500 I would be happy. I don't want to hijack your great thread but if anyone knows of a diff like this for sale (preferably in the Brisbane area) please drop me a pm.

I gather quite a few guys in the US have cammed their L76 so it's certainly possible but my understanding is most have gone reasonably big so had to go the whole hog and change lifters etc. which I don't want to have to do if I can avoid it.
