My experience of windows was 6.5 on my Samsung Omnia and I just found that horrible to use. I initially got it thinking it would be an easy thing to link up and use with my PC, how very wrong I was. The best thing I have found to work with PC hookup is Symbian. I know a lot of people hate it but I have found it the easiest to use out of anyother mobile OS.
I have never had great experiences with Symbian over the years. Admittedly I haven't used the OS for about 5-6 years, so my arguements are null and void I would imagine. I loved the N900 and the N9 with Meego looks awesome, but is a stillborn environment.

Windows 6.5 was an interesting step. Amazing how much you have to wrestle with a Windows Product to make it work with Windows - never a huge fan of 6.5, but I havent used it in 18 months so I had pretty much forgotten about its problems.

Windows Phone is a complete rewrite and works exceptionally well with Windows. Windows Apollo (which is Windows Phone 8) next year will tie in even closer to Windows 8.

The Samsung, for all of its power, still seems to lag at certain points, which is disconcerting with such a device. It gets pretty warm after about 10 minutes of gaming/movies which is ok except it points to lack of heat removal, which for me will be an issue in a lot of circumstances.

I will focus on the things I find annoying the most, which Windows Phone does a lot better:

    * browsing - IE9 is exceptionally faster and smoother, and the zooming in/out, font smoothing is immediate, whereas it is laggy and slower than it should be on the SG2 (Checkrom v2,0, DK Silyah Kernel 2.1.1)
    * BT stack - I have tried numerous apps on the marketplace, none have the ability to read my messages as they come to the phone whilst in the car - they can all read from the phone speaker, just not through the car BT. Windows Phone is a matter of turning BT on, pairing with the car and that is it - works perfectly with no configurations.
    * - Audio quality - listening to music through Senneheiser headphones, the Windows Phone gives a much warmer sound - not huge, but annoys me just the same.
    * - Email - basic app on SG2 is crap for Exchange - Touchdown is great, but fiddly to get it just how I need it. Windows Phone exchange is just very well done, email threading is well done.

That's pretty much it - there are a few others, but these are the things I do most, so they have the most visibility to me.

Like I said, the phone is great, Android is better than it has been, and there are some nice apps available, but it doesn't suit the horse on my course.

My wife on the other hand, really uses her phone to call/sms/take photos/social media, and leaves it alone until something goes wrong with it. She is happy, I am happy everybody wins.

Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2

    Thanks for the info TL.

My work phone is the humble E72 and although it has its moments where it hangs (which is a very rare occurence, needed to reset maybe 4 times in the year I've had it) its great. Connectivity through BT will read its msgs through your car speakers and voice txt'ing short cuts work as well.

Windows connectivity is the easiest of all phones I have used as well with Nokia suite being able to easily manipultate my contacts, txts, e-mails, pics etc. And if I'm lazy drag and clicking works easy as! Because of this I was seriously considering the N9 but was put of it by the store clerk who was not a fan. That and no flash on its browser.

I used to be pretty tech savy, but I dont work in the IT industry, and work commitments now don't have me doing much with computers anymore outside of outlook, word and excel so my skills have kind of gone backwards. Easier to use and the less messing about the happier I am now. Don't have time to be messing about.

Can't stand i-Tunes so haven't gone the way of Apple. I know they're supposed to be great and easy to use but all I see is being locked in to specific programs, overpriced equipment with tech that is at least one gen behind. I just can't get past the price vs the specs you get.

I would suggest then that either iOS or Windows Phone would suit the majority of what you do.

I would suggest the Windows Phone platform over the Apple one simply because the amount of different devices and configurations can be had, but still utilise the one regulated OS. I personally don't like the iTunes experience (Zune feels a lot nicer day to day usage).

I don't think the Apple phones are really hideously expensive anymore, as almost all of the top end smartphone are between 700-1000 outright, which is reasonable (IMO). There are wild variations between CPU/GPU/Screen Size/Screen Type/Screen Resolution though, which can be a minefield trying to buy something when you are a little uncertain.

Looks like Android and iOS need to be careful.

    Next up, Microsoft I suppose.

Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2

Wasn't too sure if I should start a new thread or not, this one is getting on the large side....

But Samsung Galaxy Nexus Vs Motorola Razr/Spyder?

I like the look of the Samsung better and have always had something against Motorola's for some reason?
But they're pretty similar on paper with the Razr having a better camera and the Nexus getting Ice Cream Sandwhich straight out of the box.. I wouldn't think it would be long before the Razr got it too though?

Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2

Just thought I'd update this for anyone interested in the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Received mine last week. So far so good.

It's quite a large phone, but that works well for me. Everything seems to work well so far, but I will say that it is EXTREMELY power hungry. Last few phones I've had to charge from empty every day guaranteed, this I'm charging minimum twice per day from empty.

Other than that, screen is fantastic and everything seems to work as it should. Ask away if anyone has questions!

That'd be awesome if there's any available yet. Can't seem to find any, but I've only look on ebay so far.

Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2

Yeah, strapping a large battery on such a thin device detracts from its original design.
Especially in the case of the nexus galaxy as it would then become the worlds longest, widest, fattest phone.
Am I the only one who remembers when phone manufacturers were trying to have the smallest devices?

I need to get on a plan, and at the moment using my old Sony ericsson k800i.
    Man that's a good phone.

I'm questioning whether I need a smart phone at all.

Hearing about the battery life of the galaxy nexus concerns me, as I was waiting for it to hit our shores before making a decision.

Looks like its back to the s2 or iPhone.
Unfortunately I have a lot invested in the iTunes app store, so will probably go iPhone.
I'm no idiot, I know that's why apple have pushed so hard for the app store, so that you do get locked in.
Meh, the iPhone is easy to use, and quite frankly, it's big enough for my pocket.
If I can't drive it from one side of the screen to the other with my thumb, then it loses a lot of its lustre as an easy to use device.
One handed operation is all I want when in the bathroom.
You know what I'm talkin' about.

Re: Iphone or Samsung Galaxy 2

Back when a mobile phone really was just a phone, with maybe a calculator and probably a camera for good measure, smaller was better. Now phones are a multi-media device and along with almost all media devices, larger is better*. I said earlier that the GS2 is about as big as I'd go and I still can't see myself going any larger. I don't use my phone for movies much, if at all, which would be my only reason to go a larger screen. It would be useful for internet browsing and reading books, etc as well, but not useful enough for me to justify the added bulk. 4.3" screen is about it for me.

*Without going stupid and designing a 50" phone.

yeah, I guess I already have an iPad to act as my instant-on, net browsing device, so don't "need" that much functionality out of my phone when lounging around the house.

This is true. The introduction of the current generation tablets has really eroded the functionality needed in a smartphone.

If you don't own a tablet (and don't intend getting one) the new phones with a huge screen are probably a great option (because they do the job of both, albeit not as good as either), but if you have a tablet there is little point in putting up with a huge heavy phone with poor battery life.

Or you could buy an iPhone and have a smaller, even heavier devise with poor battery life, when comparing with the GS2 of course. Even then the much, much larger Galaxy Nexus is 10g heavier than the 4S. 150g compared to 140g. Much closer than that of the 4S and the still noticeably larger GS2, which weighs 116g.

I thought I'd point out that larger does not automatically equal heavier. I also disagree about the large vs small smartphone comment you made. The only thing a smaller, generalised smartphone does better than a larger, also generalised one is fit in your pocket, and seeing as phones are spending less and less time in our pockets it's not exactly a deal breaker. I do agree that even a huge smartphone doesn't do the job of a tablet as well as a tablet though.

Danwell I usually get an easy two days as well, although with very heavy use that can quickly be reduced to a day or less, depending on the tasks.
