    SV6 vs SS Purchase

I was dead set on buying a new SV6, but after looking at the resale value between the cars (57% after 3 years for the SV6, 66% for the SS) it seems like most of the 4-5k extra for the SS will come back when I sell it?

Does anyone else have similar experiences with this? Is it worthwhile jumping up knowing the gain in performance and sound balanced against the resale improvement?

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

    Hi

I made the mistake of getting an SV6 thinking it had enough power and was cheaper than the SS. I didn't look at it from a resale value point of view. Don't get me wrong as there is nothing wrong with the SV6 apart from the fact that I went from an SV8 to SV6. I kept it for 18 months and then got the V8 Calais. IMO if your into V8's then I would just get it from the start and enjoy it.

Does anyone have a hard figure for how much extra exactly I should be paying for the SS is over the SV6?

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

On a LS (V8) forum you will get no fans of the SV6 here. SS is worth the extra in some cases can be purchased for not much more than a SV6. SV6 is the new omega these days.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

The valuation tool on car sales says a MY12 SS is 5k more than the SV6 MY12 manual and 6k more in the auto, if it's resale you're worried about than I think you have answered your own question, I would go the SS, my misses has a SV6 and power wise it doesn't have anything on the V8.

Will you be able to sell the 8 in a couple years time to even worry about resale. 4's might be worth more than 6/8 cyl cars by then...

    That is a good point.

Mind you if I buy an SV6 it would be the fastest car (by a little bit over an XR6) that I have ever owned. Never driven a V8 before and it seems stock they dont really sound that much better over the new SIDI 3.6l V6 and there is only about a second between them performance wise?

Is the gap bigger than I think somehow (without mods)?

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

You need to go test drive both, it will be rather clear to you after you do this on the power side of things, I own a VX SS with bolt on mods and a tune and only just managed to beat a VE SS with only a OTR CAI and a cat back installed stock tune down the strip, my misses owns a VE SV6 and I can tell you power wise it has nothing on my VX SS, so the VE SS should have the same margin theoretically speaking. I have driven my mates VE Clubsport and it is a very nice package, so nice I'm saving my pennies to get one.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

If your worried about resale, by a new Corolla. Itll be as boring as shit, but when you sell it in 3 years you wouldve lost less than what an SV6 wouldve driving it out of the yard....

My mate bought a new SV6 coming on 2 years ago now, has done 50kms and reckons he'd get 19 on the trade, considering they are popping up in dealers for 25. So theres 50% of its value lost. Who can afford that?

Buying an SS over an SV6 purely for resale reasons isnt a reason to buy an SS, IMO

Best advice I've got is don't buy either new. Your concerned about resale. Well mate let me tell you now get your lube ready because your going to get a pineapple regardless.

Buy a 2+ year old SSV

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

Its not so much being worried about the trade in on the sv6 rather its me wondering of the SS purchase is much more justified based on the resale.

I reckon if the OP is worried about resale one of the best is the Mazda3.
Most new cars are only worth around 50% wholesale value or trade in value when they get to 2 years old.
Another vote here for buying one 2 or more years old for the reason listed above.

Straight answer to that question is IMHO a big fat No.

Even if it lined up 4k is chicken change over the life of the car. You'll end up worse off with running costs alone.

By all means get yourself a v8. But don't justify it to yourself with flawed logic.

Personally I'm not a fan of the Holden v6. Buy a new xr6-t if you are going to get a 6. Or even better a few year old g6e turbo. Cheaper, faster, classier.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

Don't forget if you buy a V8 and your on these forums, the resale value will be outweighed by the cost of mods

EDIT: If your trying to find a good excuse to tell the missus, then the resale value of the SS is well worth it
