W427 has no pedigree on the race track. Rose coloured glasses all you want.
My argument in this case is somewhat pointless, It would take something special to get me into a new HSV or Holden for that matter.. HSV needs more than a pretty engine for me to want one.
Alex, a SV6 would not beat a XY GTHO Falcon on the quarter mile drag strip.
It was suggested it would and that is not correct.
Buddy, I have been in the motor industry 37 years and have driven a number of them.
Get close??? ..............Well you might call it close, but it would not win.
Hey I get the point that stock cars are much faster than they used to be 40 years ago (1972),
but the GTHO would still be faster than the SV6 over the quarter mile.
That was the point that I was arguing.![]()
Agree Alex.
I have stated openly on many, many occasions most of what you mention. The line I regularly use is "$100,000 motor in a $4,000 car".
Whilst it is not that bad, and quality is not that far off, the VE is a great machine (I've had two, and you have seen both go down the track).
But, for me, the performance is the most important aspect and the difference is not that great on the rest (as contradictory as that may sound). If the motor and performance were not important, I would be in an Aurion running 14.6's.
We need to catch up so I can chuck you the keys and get your thoughts.
Your spot on Luke, no pedigree what so ever. Any comparison to GTHO or any car of the era is ridiculous. And, like I mentioned, I love the W and HSV.
And, your argument is very valid as you are a true enthusiast with a wealth of automotive knowledge who is not blinded by dumbfounding loyalty.
Ultimately, going through the mod thing, it all comes down to the fact that big performance is relatively cheap to achieve. htv2300 and lots of power is there. You can do it yourself easy. You cannot change the chasis, panels, build, mrc ... Even Auto wipers etc. However, what plagues the big blower on an ls3 equation is warranty, insurance, law, never quite being sure it won't break ... That's where a factory unit simply wins when you must have the power and not care too much about all else. Will hsv do it?
It would be great to catch up.
Alex
Race "pedigree" only matters to some. The fact that cars like W427 are super rare, very expensive and, in desirability terms, well above the models the "poor" HSV (or if Ford ever approve a GTHO then regular FPV models) owners can afford, is often more than enough to justify the expense and guarantee they will always be viewed as a little bit special. Regular FPV/HSV models are simply too affordable and too common to match the appeal, even if the performance is similar in some areas. If people want to view all these cars in purely dragstrip terms, best to just go to a tuner and get your everyday model tarted up. Anyone can make a car go faster than a factory model, but no tuner will ever produce genuine desirability like a rare factory model can. Many have tried, and all are worth sweet FA now.
You do have an opinion actually, because you chose to judge my input and put it down in words for the world to see, including this little pearler..."blinded by dumbfounding loyalty"...No opinion my @rse.
I think you need to go back in time. ALL the pricey old local metal suffered severe depreciation before rising to elevated levels. Hell, a mate bought a HQ GTS 350 Monaro coupe for 8 grand in the late 80's, because you almost couldn't give them away. He sold it a few years later and almost paid for a unit in full in Perth, pre mining boom days. W427 is way too new to be looked at the way you are looking at it. They need to get genuinely old first, a few get written off, a few get quite shabby and high in daily driver km's, and what remains become increasingly desirable. THEN, they go up in value.

And ONE Australian example, the whole point of the exercise???
Forget CSV, DJR, Brock- away from HDT, Herrod, Walkinshaw, and many others that have looked to profit from this market. NONE have produced road cars worth a damn above their base car cost, and have little if any desirability above the base cars, bar for perhaps people looking for an aftermarket modified car already built with their mod list.
Herrod Intercooler for sure.
