Question VE SS - what should I be looking for?

    Hi all,

long time lurker and second time poster. Apologies for what may be a commonly asked question ( i did search to no avail ) but I need some advice about a potential purchase of a VE SS sedan. I was previously after a VY Maloo but with my partner now having a company car and me also having one, we've decided to sell both our private cars and get one for the weekends, trips away etc. Since Ford in their infinite wisdom dropped the XR8, the SS is now what I'm looking at.

I know the basics about the SS's but I am getting a bit lost on the MY upgrades between series etc, ideally I'm after a manual with the in dash screen (which i think is VE2 onward?), sunroof and preferably Poison Ivy in colour (partner's pick). Anything on top of those options will be a bonus and I would look at modified examples within reason - a full exhaust and intake is something I would do myself anyway.

SS or SSV doesn't matter too much to me, cloth seats preferable over leather and the 19" wheels would be nice but always something i can buy later. My budget is around $30-35k and I would look at travelling for the right car (I'm in NSW). I don't want anything older than a 2009 model and from what Ive seen on Carsales I think I should be able to get this within the budget.

Can anybody advise whether there are/were any significant upgrades between the MY models that I should take into consideration. As above we have a few definite 'must haves' but anything else will be a bonus.

Thanks in advance for any info anybody can offer.

Don't need a series 2 to get the display in the centre console area just need the SSV which would give you the leather seats, Saying that you don't want the leather seats but they only come with that in an SSV. SS and SSV's come with 19's from the factory just different styles.

Thanks, that opens up a few options then. The better half reckons leather gets too hot in summer etc, I'm fine with having them.

SS only have 18s. Doesn't really matter if you're looking to put aftermarket rims on except you'll probably get a bit more second hand for the 19s.

You didn't say if manual or auto. If auto, you could consider a Calais, a bit more up market. Some Calais V's seem to have the rear spoiler (G8) and look pretty good, you get the dash screen with Calais and SSV. Not that much difference in the MY's if you are looking 2009 up. MY 9.5 and MY 10 both are AFM in auto, otherwise late 2010 is the VE II. No Poison Ivy in a Calais. There's a pretty good looking MY10 SS in Poison Ivy auto on Carsales for $28K, only 20,000 km, but in the pics it has Qld rego plates.

Re: VE SS - what should I be looking for?

I picked up a brand new manual MY2010 SS Ute in Poison Ivy during the run out sales about 15 months ago for $35,000 drive away.

The series1 SS is bare boned but as I was looking for a paddock basher I couldn’t say no to the price.

If I was buying second hand I’d be looking at a Series II SS, you probably won’t get Poison Ivy but you will get a better screen if that’s what you are after.
Otherwise a Series1 SSV with leather, screen, projectors and 19’s is a much better starting point than the Series1 SS.

Great price blackve, good pick up

Personally I'd stick with the 08-10 ssv. IMO the big circle air vents on the dash in the series 2 ve's kill the look

Re: VE SS - what should I be looking for?

Other than the Series II interior/front styling changes, there has been very little change to the manual SS/SSV between 2006 and now. Only big change I can think of is that in early 2008 all Commodores got side and curtain airbags - the SS until that point only had side airbags unless you optioned leather. I can't recall if that's officially MY8.5 or MY09.

Re: VE SS - what should I be looking for?

Thanks to all for the replies. Unfortunately I found out today the buyer for my XR8 ute has fallen through, so it is going to take a little longer now. Not happy.
From what I have been looking at on carsales etc I am thinking a Series II would be a good option, my dad bought himself an S2 Equipe and it's a very nice car on the inside. I guess the upside to the setback is that the prices of Series 2 might drop a little more while I'm waiting to sell my ute. Anybody want an XR8?!
