    Re: Fpv gt rspec

Why must every thread like this turn to pus? Isn't about time even the most one eyed Holden fan acknowledge that there is an alternative out there? And it is a damn good alternative. Who cares if you will never buy one or even never buy a new car or mod a new car? I don't. I don't care who you are, who you work for or how much money you do or don't have. I for one am in the market for a new drive and while I chose an E2 R8 over an F6 last time round that doesn't mean the blue oval is out of the question. What one person thinks is important is very likely different to what the next person thinks. The driveline of the F6 absolutely ate the R8 but the dynamics and seating position meant I stuck with what I knew, oh and the memories of the last turbo 6 falcons foibles and the time it spent in the workshop which were very fresh in my mind influenced that too. This new FPV is a different kettle of fish altogether. I really look forward to reading what the guys who have actually bought an FPV have to say especially the comments about problems and living with the cars day to day. That helps me make up my mind. Right now I am in a quandry. Limited edition GTS due next month (supposedly), F series due in March next year (supposedly) or an R spec GT-E? Hmmmmm. Been out of the country and a bit busy but I have to get my arse in an R spec for a run. Oh and yes I will be modifying my new toy, whatever it is......................

Great dilemma to have, don't you think?

Those who own performance cars arguing with those who read about them.

Says it all as far as I’m concerned.

It would be different if Bouka’s was a Ford tragic but his car history says he’s not.

Therefore as a conscientious consumer, I’d listen to his input long before that of someone selling copy to excite the wannabes or the wannabes themselves who’ve never own the machines they are experts about.

Listening to the advice of a wannabes is akin to asking a car salesman at a dealership which product is best.

Those who do, do and those who don’t, preach.

Can't agree with you there mate.
I am NOT an expert in the art of defining what is "right", and what is "wrong" with the chassis, the drivetrain, handling, suspension or whatever of ANY car. I might "like" it, I might think it's driving Ok, but what it's actually "doing" right or wrong, would be beyond my comprehension.....and I'm not talking about how hard it accelerates, how good the brakes are etc....anyone can do that. But the finer points of what a car is actually doing, & what it's not "doing", is, IMHO, fairly accurately described by the majority of motoring scribes....and bear in mind, they're NOT just driving a Holden or a Ford, they're driving EVERYTHING, so they're in a much better to compare. They also have the opportunity to drive the vehicles very severely in all conditions, on closed roads, which we are unable to do.
So yes, I DO read motoring journals, not cover to cover because some of the stuff doesn't interest me..but I do take notice of what they've got to say, particularly relative to vehicles I may possibly contemplate owning.
Having said that, yes I do take note of Journos' opinions, road tests, BUT at the end of the day, I simply buy what "I" (or wifey) like.
I'm not particularly a Holden/HSV person....I bought a Focus RS last year. But, when comparing FPV & HSV of recent years, I've simply preferred the HSV product.
    Cheers, Pickles .

And it seems more people seem to be buying the HSV's.

    Agree, great dilemmas to have!

They all have their pros and cons.

    Gte won't come in rspec.

VF HSV is definitely worth waiting for and will see me back in another HSV.

Sc fpv really is a breathtaking driveline (and the rspec performance figures are unbelievable). Worth a look. IMHO though I would wait for vf HSV if your not in a hurry (happy to comminucate over pm as to why).

Happy to answer any questions about my experiences, although I must inform you I am not a journalist and do not regularly read the magazines so my knowledge is limited!

Ahhhh, very refreshing. A man of intelligence.

Not arguing really, just having some fun. Although admittedly the ignorance and arrogance does sometimes get frustrating.

As you so keenly observed, I am a car enthusiast not a blinded fanboy. Although my first car was a vc sle v8 and I have bought many HSV's. I do confess to being a Holden man at heart.

I very much agree with you last few comments.

    Re: Fpv gt rspec

No motoring magazine could sway me.

I’d rather listen to the opinions of the owners and it’s all the better when the owner has owned a range of vehicles to compare with. It’s one of the reasons I join car forums, I prefer to read what others have to say about their cars.

As soon as I read the words “I test drove” or see quotes from motoring journalists I dismiss the views of the poster. Who can possibly really know a car from a test drive and why bother to quote the opinions of others?

I hope you're right. I'm half expecting to find the opposite is true and either I'll stick with the VE or look at the FPV. Please be right!!!

No need to agree with me, it all a matter of taste, just enjoy what it is that turns you on.

I listen to what people have to say about cars but I eventually buy what I want for the reasons that suit me. That’s something we do have in common.

I don’t read any car magazines apart from Unique Cars, these days the older models of my youth are my main focus.

There are a lot of things that can be said about sales figures and why some products succeed and others don’t, superior products don’t always win.

The HSV brand has strong market recognition among a good percentage of Aussie men.

That recognition does not necessarily equate to product knowledge.

We could all tell funny stories about the things people say about cars.

HSV for years produced a better V8 product than FPV and deserves the sales and market presence it has today because of it.

Improving sales increased its recognition in the market place along with its desirability.

The HSV and FPV cars today are much closer but the mindset of the average consumer hasn’t changed and won’t change for some time.

A good market position takes years to achieve and unless something catastrophic occurs, it also takes years to lose.

Most buyers of new HSV’s are not car enthusiasts, they have money and are buying a preconceived image.

The enthusiasts on the other hand will be more informed long before there is generational change.

At one time Sony traded as a brand so recognisable that their product didn’t have to be as good as the competition as the consumer wanted a Sony product in their home over all else. That’s peer desirability. Apple bathes in a similar world.

By the time the general public becomes aware the new Ford product is a goer and has something serious to offer as an alternative to HSV and it becomes desirable to own one, it will be too late to help improve FPV’s sales figures.

By that time it’s unlikely it or HSV will exist as we currently know it.

Which car is better, farked if I know.

In the meantime I’m learning to tune a Rochester again and I won’t care or bother to look up until the VF HSV version arrives, now where is my timing light.

its funny that anyone would think that a magazine company like wheels or motor...who are in this day and age struggling to survive...would possibly strive to advertise, support and back a certain brand to give them an edge or a boost in sales so to speak.. Lets be honest here...im talking about holden and hsv. Now for whatever reasons (those in the know know its predominately lack of advertising product) ford sells alot less here in australia. Now it makes sense that there are more fans of holdens.....hence why if you look back thru past issues there will always be more holden pro content. Its makes good buisness sense.

Now im EXTREMELY suprised at how in a PERFORMANCE magazine test with PERFORMANCE cars being tested....the car that is fastest, toughest, handles the best but has the worst tech...does'nt win....IS A JOKE.

Hang on maybe these days in a performance car test its all about tech levels. IM LOST

Wow if the Hsv manages to win the performance tests now with such an outdated and inferior product, it really is going to be a bloodbath when the far superior new model comes out... I mean if they can't sell a ford at the moment what chance will they have of selling them then??

But like you said, maybe that's just part of Wheels magazines master plan? To kill off the Falcon?

You're "LOST" because you're not quoting the article correctly.....re your second last paragraph....the only thing you've quoted CORRECTLY is that it is the fastest....IN A STRAIGHT LINE. The magazine did NOT say it handled the best...in fact it said that handling was still an issue.
Whether you want to agree with "magazine articles" or not, is fair enough.....but if you are going to refer to them, well you might as well be accurate. For anyone that is interested, pages 76 & 78 of the Wheels magazine will demonstrate what this article actually said.
    Cheers, Pickles.

noooo.....handling was way better in the GTrspec. Performance wise that is....and thats what the test was for right? Yes it was. Ive never heard a car winning a comparo because it was slower around a corner...but it was comfier....OMG. They take this R spec way out of context...because its a R SPEC car..designed with track inspiration. Its a concept the magazine doesnt address even once to explain the suspension tune and setup.
The very statement where they comment that they feel the hsv wouldnt loose any time at all around a track is just plain rubbish to me and any other non biased reader. We all know despite the standard GT being harder to drive fast...it was still faster around a track as it was. Now its even faster with more grip and a suspension setup designed for cornering and they flatly ignore the possibillity of it out performing the HSV. Give me a break. How can you possibly defend that biased rubbish.

Now if they where comparing a grange v the chrysler and the GT with cruising the focus then you can throw out everything ive said so far. But this is supposed to be a performance comparo......not a ....but mines comfier and has an extra techy gismo so that makes up for all the seconds im behind down a strip and around a track.
