Look you could be right. I had a conversation with a mate of mine last weekend about his e3 maloo. He initially didn't want it tuned. Reckoned it was fast enough stock (pfft yeah right). Took him for a drive in mine. He changed his mind lol. Only problem is his wife didn't. So stock it remains. But just goes to show while a lot of punters might be contempt with their cars power stock. Do they know any better if not exposed to what they can be.

Gotta disagree there Macca.
When you modify a car, except of course by way of a Turbo, or Supercharger, the increase of power & torque, does not manifest itself until higher in the rev range....For sure higher up, ya get more power, ...and I'm not going to quote the rev range, because as you know, it varies according to the mods & the car.....but generally speaking it happens at 4000RPM plus, and the large gains happen over that.
I've seen several of the tunes for our own car, & up to around 4000 there's virtually no difference, but get up higher, & yes .....there's more there.....but with normal driving, it's almost impossible to use.....I mean, in the suburbs...over 60kph, & if ya're caught, ya're in trouble.
So yes, I'd agree with Nick...anything over 300kw, ya don't really need it.
I have been offered a couple of tunes on our own car......it's got 358KW at the fly....AND I KNOW PLENTY ON HERE WOULD HAVE HEAPS MORE THAN THAT (so, not bragging!), but I just don't need it...and in the suburbs, I can use a fraction of the power...then ya've gotta back off.
And look, if there was a more powerful engine I could've optioned in our car, I probably would've ordered it, because it's nice to have (the most powerful engine option), but very rarely can ya use it.
Cheers, Pickles.
I’ve definitely noticed the seat of the pants difference a tune makes to the low down drivability in the VE’s both manual and auto and would recommend one.
On the other hand, Pickles new car wouldn’t need a tune, it’s already on the edge of its traction capabilities straight out of the box and easily starts to slip and slide with a quick stab of the accelerator even in comfort mode. It also hooks up reasonably well and makes good time in a straight line. Anything extra over what the factory gave it would only be for bragging rights or the track.
The VE’s on the other hand ain’t as efficient in doing that without a little aftermarket help.
Do I need more power for my cars, the simple answer is, yes and no.
.
Yes, I can believe that...it would be at about 2000rpm.....LS1 would have nothing at that speed.
But I re-iterate that power & torque does not increase much before 4000RPM......?.....BUT, I could be wrong......'cause I ain't no tuning guru.
So, best way to settle this is for a few of you guys to list your tuning mods & put up some "before & after" graphs, then we'll be able to see what's happening?
Cheers, Pickles.
Its more like 1600-1700rpm at 100km/h.
I don't think before and after dyno graphs will tell the full story anyway.
Things like better throttle response, removal of torque management, quicker upshifts (on autos) etc, are things you feel when you drive the car. You don't have to drive the car hard to feel these benefits, although I agree you don't get the full benefits unless you drive it like you stole it.
In addition dyno graphs generally tend to start start at about 2500RPM up.

In an LS1 ... ???
I thought we were talking about cars sold today, I've driven a stock V8 Calais, stock V8 Caprice, stock V8 SSV and stock V8 HSV Grange, Clubsport & GTS ... none of them have any issues holding 100 km/h.
LS1 from 8 - 10 years ago, sure, tune away. However I don't think we are comparing an LS1 with the FPV GT R-Spec.
DENY YOURSELF NOTHING !!!
Nick, I think macca was just using the LS1 as an easy to relate to example for most of the members on this forum.
I think anyone with any reasonable amount of mechanical sympathy should be able to notice the power gains throughout the
rev range and throttle response on a well tuned car.
A mate of mine has a FG FTP 335 which he got tuned and the car had heaps more power all the way through, he is wrapped with the change
and I have driven it a number of times before and after and I can tell you it is a massive, noticable improvement.![]()
Bit sad that everytime I check on the forums the top thread is about a Ford...
Happiness isn't around the corner... it IS the corner
