I'd say they are just trying to get as many people hooked into their ecosystem as possible at this point, probably due to the growing popularity of Android and MS's attempts to start vertically integrating as well.
So if you bought the "new" iPad 4 months ago, are you going to get the "newer" one released today, or the iPad mini?
looks like Apple cannibalising it's own market to make money now - will people buy the mini over the maxi pad, will the iPod lose out to the mini - better experience for games and web, so seems an easy sell point.

Is the new new iPad any different besides the lightning connector? Faster? Longer battery? I guess I could just hit the tech sites but I'm too lazy![]()
iPhone fits in my pocket ... iPad has a nice big screen.
Anything in between doesn't really make sense to me ...![]()
DENY YOURSELF NOTHING !!!
It seems to follow the Intel cycle of hardware refreshing, surely battery life is better as a result?
I think Steve Jobs new that having few products increased the product margins, I don't see this smaller iPad doing much other than eating into iPod touch sales - it's not a serious competitor for the Nexus 7 at that price point.
A6X processor is twice as fast as the A5X?! Wow. That's a big jump
I can't justify the iPad mini yet. A few guys at work are getting on them as organisers to which I can see merit in as the iPad in this sense is quite large I've found
iPhone 5
It's also $100 or so dearer than the competition, all I see it doing is eating into Ipod Touch sales.
I'm more pissed that they updated the Macbook pro range, 13" now available with retina display as well as SSD storage
I just got a new MacBook 15 and I gave the retina a miss. As really it's only the display they have as an advantage.
My main reasons were;
1 I have a Thunderbolt Display at home
2 my macbook has the high res option. If you run both mine and a retina at native resolution I actually get more screen real estate as the retina uses pixel doubling to sharpen objects. Of course you can run the retina higher than mine out of retina mode, but its borderline ridiculous how small everything is.
3 the ssd I chucked in mine is faster than the proprietary 830 Samsung varient used in the retina
4 my 16gb of 1600mhz ram upgrade cost half what it would of to option a retina
5 the unibody case has more ports ie gigabit and a SuperDrive inboard
6 all other hardware ie CPU GPU is the same
7 I can fix it if for example the battery dies
iPhone 5

My old workplace has a few iPads. They were about to buy another thousand last month. Apple said "we can't say anything, but wait till after oct 24th before placing an order if you can".
Good guy apple reps
Interesting thought
I got given an iPad at work, and its sat in my desk since I got it. Too big & too heavy to be of any use or beneficial to the iPhone. I've hinted switching to Samsung but our CEO is in love with apple products.
In saying that I could probably justify a mini as at times the iPhone screen is too small. It would have to be lightning fast syncing with the phone, not just mail/contacts, and have 3/4g capability not just wifi for what I would use it for.
Shane though half the fools will end up owning one of each just to be 'apple cool'
