Ah, OK. Everybody with half a brain I'm sure realises business exist to make money and hopefully only hate rip offs, excessive profits, price gouging etc.. I hope........![]()
Whether intentional or just lacking knowledge in the area, I do agree with big fist that many people are seriously out of touch with what the "going rate" is for many things in life. I'm not just talking cars either.
The main area people fail badly from my experience is the area of "hidden costs" to run a business. They just think that item X probably only costs X dollars to produce, so why does it end up costing double that, or triple, or five times, or whatever. The "business" starts with the manufacturer and their costs, then possibly a wholesaler and their costs, then the retailer and their costs. All these places have people getting paid to be in some way involved with that item. Often all these places may have to store their stock for periods of time. Storage costs considerable money on it's own. It all adds up- far more than most realise.
People work so they can afford to buy houses and cars and holidays and and so forth, so business owners should also be able to do so. A business has to ride both the good times and the bad times too remember people, so they have to make decent money in the good times, or they wont have any reserves to ride out the bad times that inevitably occur every now and again.
Agreed davo.
And at the end of the day, if businesses like mechanics or auto air techs didnt exist, who would repair your shite?
Business's need to make a profit to survive otherwise they are pointless!
Sorry but you guys complaining about $100+ per hour have no ****ing idea at all. It costs a FORTUNE to maintain a dealership service department. Not only do you have to pay for shit all the little workshops pay, but you have to pay for extra diagnostic equipment, mandatory special service tools, mandatory training for ALL service department staff (even the guys on the front desk), access to the brand's dealer network (website, shop manuals etc). It all costs money and that money has to come from somewhere. Some of the brands I have worked for dealerships for also have very specific requirements such as how many lumens the light over each tech's workshop bay has to be, must have specific customer facilities, shuttle service, loan cars, etc and it all costs $$.
As for this particular issue, $150 is about right - an hour's labour and gas (you have to regas it to diagnose it). Stop being such a tight prick and either pay it, or go learn to work on your bloody car yourself.

Like everyone else, you're a whinger. The $150 was a bargain to have a quality diagnosis. Hell, they replaced receiver dryer, pipes, tx valve, test after test. My god. And FFS ... $150 is too much? How much do you spend on fuel?
Below is my invoice for AC fix.
Worth every cent. Having "invested" $500 in three other shops who were happy to just keep re-gassing and misdiagnosing the issue, the job completed above was top value for cold air.
