Its actually starting to grow on me a little......some more mods 154rwkw, E85, coilovers (to properly sort the wayward handling), exhaust, wheels etc. Not too bad!

I actually drive this one a bit versus leaving it parked. Thats says something (not much) but it does deliver a bit of buzz

All that I've read talks about "fun" handling, rather than fastest lap generating "stunning" handling.
"Fun" is of course quite a variable, depending on the person you ask...
The other thing often read is that Toyota designed it from the outset to be played with heavily by tuners, rather than attempting to release the ultimate product for the retail consumer.

I suppose it depends on ones definition of fun.
For journos driving around at low speed its fun to get the back a little loose and have the thing slide - thats for sure.
For someone actually trying to use it on the track the nature of the car to have the back overtake the front in one sudden switch at 130km/h plus when the things loaded up can be a little on the spooky side. It can be dialled out, but its certainly a trap for the unwary...and there have been a few binned due to that trait
Thats not just my opinion, some of the better Tarmac drivers in Australia, the likes of Glenney, Crocker etc. all seem to share the same opinion

    Or maybe.....Im just getting old

    Re: Toyota 86

I went for a test drive in an auto GT two weeks ago (it was the only one the dealership had) and i didn't mind it.
I didn't give it a thrashing as it was on public roads and i am just an average driver even though the salesman was suggesting i push it a little harder.
The two observations are that it didn't seem to accelerate any faster or handle substantially better than the focus i have , but the auto transmission didn't annoy me like the in the Focus does (it's shuddering again occasional)

Every time is see one of these I think "Finally all the hairdressers can buy a new car!" Their Celicas must be getting pretty long in the tooth by now.

Just as high powered cars in the hands of low quality drivers have been a trap for the unwary for decades hey...
Yes, your definition of "fun" is perhaps rather different to most other peoples, but at the end of the day, Toyota and Subaru have produced a very affordable rear wheel drive coupe in an era that is almost devoid of affordable rear wheel drive coupes. Since most buyers will be doing low speed stuff like these journo's, maybe that's why people say the makers nailed it! The track stuff is when tuners are meant to get involved.

The hairdressers still had other front wheel drive coupe options.
Mostly from Hyundai in recent years.

Its a pretty average hairdresser that spends $35K on a new car....(maybe the apprentice or trainee?)
The good ones are $200K+ a year folk, so maybe time to recalibrate the expectation meter some when it comes to hair decorating folk C4B
