Good luck finding the culprit & remember to post back the outcome!
What happens to the noise when you use the brakes, softly, medium and hard ?
Could it be the universal joints ?
Can you put a wheel up and look for backlash sticking brakes ?
cheers Paul
A long shot for an alternator is to tune your radio when "OFF a station" on AM,
see if the whine corresponds to alternator noise if you have any.
Does the noise change when you turn the headlights on to HI from OFF.
Loosing a phase on an alternator can make it whine, they can flatten your
battery yet that does not always happen.
Whatever is making the whine probably makes it run hot from friction.
Has any work been carried out in the last few months ?
How about taking it to a few different mechanics and getting a "quote" for repairs,
unfortunately they are probably all closed for the xmas / new year break.
Make sure they don't charge for the quote though.

Well I drove from St Kilda (no roadside service needed) and now in Cheltenham with the fuel cap half undone.
So far.....
So good.
Would be inclined to call into to Chevos when he reopens in the new year.
what the hell.. fuel cap?? how does that work? (or how doesn't it work in this caase ) ....
Something amiss in the Charcoal/Evap system would be my guess, there's a valve in the engine bay that is open under certain parameters to vent the Charcoal Cannister to the intake, without it you'll see positive pressure in the tank, open the cap and the pressure is relieved (just a "guess" based on the noise is gone cap open)
Well I picked up a new fuel cap and there is a noticeable difference in the 2 units.
Drove home from the dealership, no noise so far.
