Under a bonnet listening for knock with my earmuffs on
I got rid of the whine in my Monaro too, about July... Perhaps you met me ex?
hi All,
Sorry for the late reply.
I all ways did, it is part of service and not taking every penny you can get.
Most professions provide a free first consultation to sell themselves.
The only bee in my bonnet is when a customer expected me to draw
up the circuit diagram for his Hot Rod and explain for all the
components and wiring sizes to make it complete. Usually we decided
to do these as private jobs when we had time.
I think it stinks to see the gross ripoffs that seems that are the norm often,
charging $100 ph and paying the person on the tools maybe $35 ph.
If you want to charge $100 an hour start acting as if you know
what is going on instead of expecting some one to learn on your car.
For myself Saturday morning was some of the busiest times and all the single
mums and other pensioners use to come in for quick and economical repairs.
(If a medico is prepared to charge half price why not an auto electrician)
When I worked on yachts often you donate an afternoon when you
explained what has been going on, ie taking a Victorian yacht to Sydney.
Work like this generates good will with people who trust you and are
more interested in the quality of your work more than costs. (within reason)
Goodwill has no price on it, it is about mutual trust and respect and looking
out for the customer before the bank balance.
I don't think everyone should provide free quotes, the people who charge for quotes
are often the dealers and I have seen them converting a Volvo truck upgrade
on the electrics to many thousand $ repair job for the local auto electrician.
( with the possibility of incinerating the truck )
If you need repairs you ring up and ask if there is a charge for diagnosis or not,
that simple. The person can give an idea of what might be needed.
I recently paid a guy $80 for de tinting my car and he wanted $55 and
the opposition was asking for over $150. I want a new tint job that is
legal. He provided real value and competence, how can you value service
like that ? And then there is the usual spiel that they don't have insurance
if you are within a few km of the repairs!
A local mechanic relies on trust to do a bank transfer of the bill as he
did not have any eftpos facilities for payment. These places are in the
Victorian country area yet not that remote. (I loved the car detailing
every car received!)
cheers Paul.
I agree partly with your response. I run my own business in HVAC airconditioning Domestic & commercial.
I use to be the same but quickly found the majority of people will take advantage of you!! Be aware.
In a few cases I heard later these people took my advice & undertook the work themselves!
I often see the results of some of these home/backyard jobs, dunno how many I fixed up!
Will agree your regular customers you must do the hard yards for them cause they're the ones who will give you great "word of mouth" recommendations. That basically is the cream on the cake so to speak.
& I love it!!!
Ok so it's back..... the noise that is and it's angry.
I am strating to think it's a pressure issue as I was fed up with it one night and was driving home on a quiet road and and shut the car off, once the engine was off the noise stopped so I am thinking it's a back pressure issue. It's a VY related model and I know the sender is out so it might be time to remove the tank, replace the fuel pump and sender unit.
Just throwing this out there is this happened to me recently, I did read that once the car is off the noise stops in your case, but this might help someone else.
I recently had the rear tailshaft boot replaced on the X8 plus other things done at the same time and after I had this constant low level hum from about 1000rpm same pitch what ever the speed.
After trying numerous things with the mechanic we jacked the car up on all fours and and revd it till we heard the hum, just touching the tailshaft boot stopped the hum straight away.
The tailshaft went back in the same position, so we tried it out of phase 90, 180 etc, still made no difference.
The fix, 3 cable ties, one between each rib not to tight.
Strangest thing I have ever seen.
Cheers
this is my thought process when finding noises.
there are not allot of moving parts in the rear of the car so you just eliminate the ones you can think of.
diff gears
diff bearings
wheel bearings
tyres
brakes
tail shaft
fuel pump
etc.
just eliminate the things you can be sure about and that leaves the things that might be causing the noise.
i had a low pitch wurrrring noise coming from the car when turning slightly to the right.
turned out to be the brake pad in the rear left was rubbing on the brake rotor and causing a resonating noise.
i replaced wheel bearings, rotors, brake master cylinder, some bushers and some other things trying to find the noise but the last thing was the brake pad (the cheapest thing).
cost me a fortune to find the noise but now its gone and the car is fun to drive again (no more annoying noise).
good luck finding the noise
Thanks for that....um, as per my last post the car was moving so the diff was rotating, does it only on deacceleration with or with out brakes so that rules on the brakes, if it was the bearings it would be a constant issue not an intermittent one, did it before the new tyres and not after, drive shaft would also do it constantly if it was cold or hold....this only happens after 30-45 minutes of driving.
So hence my thought of a pressure related issue.
When the sound occurs and you turn the car off. If you turn the car on straight away, does the sound return immediately or does it take a while?
It does sound very much like a fuel pump issue to me. Chuck 300mls of 2 stroke oil (preferably marine/ashless grade) into the fuel tank & see is this quietens it down a bit.
