Re: raspy exhaust vyss03 ute tri ys 100 cats and cat back

thx for all the input here fellas

BOZODOS what did it set u back ? notice any noise/exhaust note difference apart from fixing the raspiness ?? any power gain or loss ??

WONKY so you suggest go a H pipe (cheap fix to start im guessing ? worthwhile doing the mufflers too ? failing that new cat back ? can you suggest a cat back for my ute vyss03 ?dont know prices at all do ya -roughly ?)

the cat back exhaust is coated black and has some shitty chrome dipped ends which look like an add on .... what could i expect to sell my catback for ?? and what would it cost for a new cat back system ??

the way mines set up is : tri ys either side of engine that come down from 2 pipeseach side into 1 via a y piece on there each respective side, then each side joins the start of the cat pipe then the cats then more cat pipe, here the cat back starts with a bit of pipe that then kisses/mergres (im guessing this is the x or H pipe ?) then more pipe that goes into 2 seperate mufflers (rectangular and rounded in shape and relatively flat ) then the rest of the twin exhaust out left hand side with some shitty chrome tips

read this on the jegs website (have no idea who jegs are if there shit or otherwise -thought id throw this up )

X-pipe and H-pipes synchronize the balance of the exhaust pulses from each bank of cylinders based on firing order which increases velocity and scavenging from each cylinder. Most people agree that X-pipes are better at improving performance than H-pipes, especially at the top end. However, H-pipes tend to have a deeper sound than x-pipe equipped vehicles and generally build power down low. These are general claims and your engine and exhaust combination could have different results.

so whats the general consensus fellas ?? change to a H pipe and change mufflers hoping this cheaper fix does the job failing this get a new cat back system ??

    appreciate all the help

Cost me about $180 for a twin 3".

I was honestly thinking about buying another catback previous to changing it as I hate that raspy note, but it's a lot better now and sounds like it should have to start with IMO. If you're not happy after that just get a new catback I reckon

Re: raspy exhaust vyss03 ute tri ys 100 cats and cat back

So that i don't go creating a new thread, and as people are talking of merge/x/h pipes i figured it's not too far off topic. So, what sort of sound would a sureflo twin 3" cat back have with the x/merge deleted for straight through pipes? I wouldn't mind my car being a little louder/deeper, and Greg suggested that deleting the merge would make it sound more angry. Has anyone swapped the merge/x pipe for straight through pipes? I have varex mufflers due to previous drone issues, so i can always set it to medium if it's not to my liking, or bolt the merge back in.

I'm after a slightly deeper, louder note and won't mind if it burbles a bit on decel or backing off the gas... I want to do headers and cats, but still not sure if i'll keep this car past March next year. Might have my eye on something else, so i don't want to spend too much just yet...

Possibly true and I have heard a few nice XForce systems, particularly the 2.5" on Big V's VE ute. However, as I said above, on a Sat arvo at Chev's when cars come in that we haven't seen before and they have an exhaust with a particular quality of note and we ask the owner (or Chev if he happens to know the car) we've only ever been wrong on picking an Xforce once and that was a custom system which possibly used some Xforce mufflers anyway.

I'm only going on the suggestions of others who've apparently done that with some success. Cost I'm not sure of but given it's easier to manufacture a H pipe than an X pipe I wouldn't expect it to be too much.

If you want a new catback I'd suggest looking at a Di Filippo 2.5" in mild steel which are apparently now only around $750. I have seen suggestions that the DF 2.5" is now made O/S, which is why they're a lot cheaper than they used to be - not sure how true. DF systems have long been regarded as one of, if not the best systems for pre VE and their 3" system (only available in stainless, therefore not cheap) is .

You wouldn't really be able to tell the rear can will have the twin tips or if you prefer a big single.

I'm told the twin is better up high, but the single helps the LS1 develop torque down low.

Do a search on YouTube, there are heaps of sound files available. Very baritone, and a quiet as you would like.

Re: raspy exhaust vyss03 ute tri ys 100 cats and cat back

currently in dialogue with walkinshaw and oztrack tuning (same joint at penrith) as ive wanted to get an otrcai and tune for a while and am thinking they can do that whilst doing exhaust and theyre in the proicess of doing payment plans so i said ill hold off i was quoted 500 oztrack tune 50 to fit a vcm otrcai ill supply and 900 for twin catback hurricane exhaust ..... only reason im considering this is the payment plan ....

other option was get sonny to do a maffless tune and supply otrcai for 1250 then get greg to fit 3" catback with twin tips 700-ish from memory ??
    so about ...

either way its 2k or there abouts but with walkinshaw i can pay it off which makes it easier for me much easier

id prefer to go to sonny @ autowerx for otrcai and maffless then greg for zorst but its getting the $$$$ saved first ( and past the minister for war and finance - my lovely wife ) lol

    opinions ???
