    Which VE A6 Mode Is Best For Drags?

    Has anybody tested out manual mode vs sports mode vs normal mode on the same day with same tyres etc at the drags and if so what did you find?

    We've just started discussing this on a much smaller forum than this so I thought I'd also ask the question here where there is likely to be a lot more input from experienced guys. It came about because I posted a video of my car doing a run at Heathcote last Sunday and someone commented that the manual shifts seemed slow (which others disagreed with) and from there it evolved into a discussion of which mode to use.

    The consensus so far (small sample) is that normal mode gives best results. For example one guy said he couldn't quite get into 12s manual shifting but normal mode gave him 12.7s and 12.6s with a best of 12.61.

    Sports mode seems to be more for the twisties where hanging onto gears longer is an advantage.

    I don't know whether stallies or FI have any impact but if so I'm particularly interested in stock stall, non FI car please.

    For drags I wouldn't have thought there would be much if any difference between D and Sport mode.

    That said, I pretty much always have my car in sports mode.

    D = Drone :P

    The normal drive shifts pee me off. It tries to be in 6th gear too often, even when it simply is not appropriate and then takes to long to make the right choice.

    Is your A6 tuned Drizt? Mine never has that problem.

    Fair enough - explains why it doesn't know what it's doing half the time. A tuned A6, whilst apparently not in the ZF class, is a joy to drive compared to stock.

    Wonks , I dont have the numbers ( drowned that brain cell ) , sports mode works best for mine, I was getting too much wheel spin on the 2nd to 3rd gear change on the street tires, sports mode holds the gear a bit longer and the shift wasnt as harsh = less wheel spin.. more full passes without wheel spin or having to lift.

    that was b4 the stall went in.

    on the et streets I am leaving it in D , sports off but havnt had enough time at the track to experiment.

    there shouldnt be any difference what mode it's in, except if the shift speeds/rpm are set different between the modes.

    I Always race mine in manual mode, but that is because it's programmed to only upshift at specific speeds. This is done in case i get wheelspin and back off the throttle and then get back into it.

    If it's left to own devices in say sports or normal auto mode it's highly likely to upshift into the next gear, then down shift again on the throttle application.
    It's happened before, It will all happen again.

    where's 1 to 1 ratio in an A6 , 5th ?, 4th? , put it in the one that doesn't allow it to go into overdrive, like 3rd in an A4 .

    Dude the a6 doesn't work like that. Its drive/sports or sequential

    AFAIK .....there is no 1 to 1 ratio in them, 4th is just under and 5th is just over.

    o.k. , can ya sit at the lights click down to 1st , then still sitting click up to 4th, or drive to the lights in 4th,
    take off and go thru the gears or does it just hold that one gear .

    Gary, I think "sports mode" on a well tuned auto should be the best,
    after all, quick firm shifting at the correct shift points is a big part of what tuning the auto trans is about.

    It will take off in 1st gear, even if you drive the car "locked" in 4th gear in a sequential it will shift back and lock back in 1st gear when you stop.
    Then you have to remember to change out of 1st gear when you take off again
