Re: Ford Australia to shut its doors

Country is going down the gurgler, no thanks to the cost of living driving up wages driving up manufacturing costs driving up cost of living. Wife just got a letter saying the cost of life insurance on her super policy has gone from $3.00 to over $4.00. Not a huge cost in the scheme of things however a huge rise compared with CPI. I am finding this sort of rise in insurance across the board too. House, car, liability, have just been told my homeowners warranty insurance premiums are about to rise 25% too pushing the cost of construction/renovation up around the country too. Where does it end? Fat company profits due to gouging and cutting back seems to be 'where it's at' at the moment.

Sad day for Australia indeed, and i feel sorry for all those who are/will be affected by this directly and those suppliers who will be affected also.

    RIP Manufacturing in Australia

    NEWS FLASH:
    It's 2013 and there's only 6 Frods in a field of about 30 currently.
Did you hit the 7 key instead of the 4?

Re: Ford Australia to shut its doors

This is very sad news for all Australians.
All the industry will suffer as a direct result of Ford stopping local manufacturing.
The Falcon and Territory are excellent cars (obviously in a changed market).
This will be a great loss never to be replaced.
Anyone who values a locally made Holden Commodore continuing in the future should be afraid.

Shame to see Ford shutting down local manufacturing. However, can't help but think the timing of the announcement is intended to undermine public confidence in GM's VF launch - misery loves company.

Not good for Australia or our work force, but look at the range of cars our Australian plants produce. Our sports cars are near on 2 tonne, and are just an oversized family car with a few extras. Hopefully Holden will remember the past commodores like the VL at around 1300kg with a V8 under it. Also fingers crossed they will look at targeting main car market; Corollas/i30 with something better than a re-badged daewoo. Then I can see a future for the industry.

Where will Holdens competition come from, where will Holdens parts come from (when the support industry feels the impact)?

Really? It's easy to sit and be smug about the situation when (and I assume) you work in another (assume again) well paid industry, not associated with the automotive industry.

Fat Cats' decisions impact real people, real families and real industries. And remember for those of left, we the taxpayer support these people if/when they join the Centrelink.

The implications run deep and "we" as a society are to blame.

Another nail in the coffin of Australian manufacturing. We're far too expensive and non-competitive globally. Where will it end?

RIP to the longest running car model in Australia's History! Sad days and this is not good news for Holden either.

Ford Australia invented the ute to the world and for that I am grateful!

Everyone's had times in a Falcon whether it was a taxi to the airport, parked in their garage, police pulling you over, company car, family car. Significant car in Australians lives for longer than I have been alive.

When I was a kid the street garages were full of Falcons and Commodores and now it's Hyundais Kias Mercedes Toyotas and Mazdas and not one single Falcon or Commodore. Really says it all.

I'm not sure that is 100% true. If Holden and Ford could sell their Falcon and Commodores worldwide and therefore in potentially large numbers, the cost of manufacturing in Australia would be less relevant.

But the Commodore went to the US and got badged a Pontiac. We all know how that ended
