It's off topic but the AMG 63 has the same rears as a C250 when you option 18's.
the reason they don't go wider is clearence - I have put unique self tensioning snow chains on the wife's estate and I can tell you that wider rubber isn't an option as they are extremely tight.

When I was talking to the guys at HSV re GTS build, they mentioned the fitting of the transmission, which sits lower under the car, because of clearance issues, therefore the transmission ground clearance was lower than desired. I'm fairly sure that I was told that it was for this reason that higher profile tryres were fitted on the rear....to increase ground clearance?

    Re: Supercharged HSV?

Saw my first wild unchartered GTS on the road this morning. Silver with standard wheels and wing. I cannot recall seeing another GenF HSV on the road (other than Simon's GTS). Naturally I was in the ute today transporting stuff so apart from excellent fuel consumption I had nothing!

When I was recently checking out the new GTS I thought it looked good straight out of the box but it was a tad too high in my opinion.

Possibly off subject but I’m a big fan of rims and tyres that fill the guards on all vehicles.
I just love the look and would be happy to put aftermarket rims on the GTS to achieve it but those who don’t like it, well each to their own.

I’m also one of those that would look at lowering it.

In regard to the C63, one reason that limits its rim width is because the cost of changing the rear of the standard C Class body shell to accommodate massive rubber was considered outside Mercedes/AMG’s brief to deliver a cheaper 6.2 litre AMG to the masses.

It should be noted though that the C63 has a wider track than the standard C Class and customers who put the actual genuine C63 rims on a C Class (as opposed to AMG accessory optional rims) will in most cases add wheel spaces to bring the rim lip out further to the guard as they tuck in too much on the standard car.

In saying that the MB forums are full of cars with wider rims and tyres on C63’s as correct offsets are the most important factor.

I’ve seen a billion cars with 265 and 275 tyres on 9 and 10 inch rims without any issues (standard width on the rear being 255). I’ve also seen 305 where the owner swears no modifications other than guard rolling was required.

I personally struggle to believe it as I have 20x10 inch rims with 285/25 rubber on the back of mine with the car lowered as far as it can go with this size and I needed to roll the guards to make it happen. I have no rubbing.
(The guard lip with on a C63 is only 5mm, which is much narrower than that of a Commodore, rolling something that narrow frightens a lot of people.)

The C63 could definitely use some wider rubber as the handling difference on mine at turn in and exit s@#ts all over the stock rim tyre configuration.

    Mine lowered with coilovers.

Mine at stock height on the standard rims

I’m sure a GTS will look just as good if it was lowered on a big fat set of tyres.

When I get mine I’ll post up some photos and hopefully prove it.

The red coupe has massively pumped guards so you will never get the GTS to look as phat as that !!!

Definitely that Black Series will accept a combo much wider than the GTS.

My point is not who has the biggest, it’s about taking full advantage of what you have and filling out the guards.

Some people may think big rims and tyres look horrendous compared to stock but to my eyes, big rubber on a lowered car is perfect.

I saw a photo of NickS’ new VF in another thread and I think it looks better than any of the others I’ve seen and it’s simply because it’s lowered. With wider rims it would look even better again.

Here’s a Black Series at stock height on stock rims
I wouldn’t say I wouldn’t love to own it but I’d prefer the red one because of its stance.

He’s my Ute with 20x10 rims with 295 tyres.
The rear makes the 255 on the front look small even allowing for the illusion created by the camera lens and depth perception.
Even though I have the guards rolled it doesn’t need it, there is a finger gap between the guard and tyre.
These rims were purpose made for my VE Clubby but I decided to put them on my Ute instead.
It’s getting the offset perfect that allows this type of combo without having to suffer any rubbing and I love to fit as wide as possible under the guards.

I’d do something similar to the GTS.

Any way, it would be boring if our cars all looked the same.

half if not 3/4's of the time going bigger/wider is just for show and most likely a backwards step,
as you tend to skimp on tyre quality , due to the insane price of 295's 305's.

and for the money you'd spend on a bigger wider rim package could be more wisely spent on a better tyre in stock dimensions.

The 275's on the back of the VF's now offer a great selection of rubber to be had.

Is that the "unreasonably priced car"?
