Re: Holden will be gone in 2017.

About 10 years back I owned a 17 year old Toyota Supra, I wanted a Cluster cover for it but they had been NLA for many years and there were none available for RHD cars worldwide.

My Dealer put an order in and Toyota did a limited production run, the process took 4 weeks and arrived at the standard pricing!

I needed an engine harness for my VZ Tonner in 2010 when I converted it from V6 to V8.... NLA, ok my Dealer puts in an emergency order to have one made we get the run around for a YEAR in the end them telling me that the Connectors have to be made for it in Singapore and there was no sign of it happening within the next 12 months... Apparently the original Vendor had lost the contract with Holden and weren't really interested in supplying them a one off harness...

So much for the "have to stock parts for 10 years" Myth... try buying any of the interior parts for an Adventra.

With the above scenario you could at the time have had a 5 year old car off the road for years if it had been involved in an accident where the engine harness had been damaged..

I have to say while I think it is a great loss to our great country particularly the knowledge and experience base, we just cant compete on production costs.

As far as all the people who will be out of work, it is very unusual to get a 4 year notice period so although sad, I can assure you I don't have any guarantee of work for the next 4 years.

Holden dealerships could be rebadged as Chevrolet.

Stock up on Holden Badges now. They are going to be a hot item when all these muppets buy a Chevy and want "holden" badges for it.

As I said before, not real emotional about it, more of a pragmatist... cant say I would be upset if that meant we could get Corvette's and Camaro's and big F/off "trucks" but we will probably just end up with 2nd rate Korean garbage.... so no win... & no different to most of the crap we get now.. and we wont win on price, the price will just remain the same and the manufacturer will pocket the difference - that's just good business sense... I know that's what I would do

If the corvette ends up being sold here that will offset my feelings about this.

I won't be buying any of their fwd rebadged POS's that is for sure. They may as well shut up shop altogether.

Had a good old laugh watching ABC news last night when they were talking about the Holden Saga, and they cross to Greg Martin, the General Manager from General Motors.... i like quirky shit like that... haha

Hmmm Corvette would be OK, but surely they will charge an arm and a leg for it.

Have to agree in part here, the thought of a rebadged Korean has no appeal to me either. Putting the thought out there and maybe PD can offer insight, I've never understood why Holden have gone down the Korean path, whilst Ford seek out models from Europe. Not to say that Euro trash is any better, but if I believe what I read, they are dynamically better, yet competitively priced.

I do still believe that the flood of brands and choice in our overly retailed market has a lot to do with the problem, so much for Hawkey and his free trade agreements.

Re: ABC news 24 says Holden gone 2017.

The market has changed because the make up of our society has changed.

Blokes who would give you a "fair go", enjoy cricket and football, v8's and a beer with mates at the pub are becoming extinct, and therefore supplying the vehicle they buy has become unprofitable.

There is very limited knowledge of the formulation of this country (good and bad), passed on or heaven forbid included in an school curriculum....try asking some of your new aussie neighbours what happened in the owen stanley ranges. Any national pride that was around has evaporated and diluted by the change in the make up of our population, and you are correct it is sad , it is angering that no one gives a sh*t and would rather save 10 bucks and buy import.

Holden closing is sad.... but i was more upset when Sidchrome started manufacturing overseas, I felt back then it was the beginning of the end for Aussie manufacturing.

That's a load of sh1t , I don't drive an Alpha or FIAT and neither do my NEW Australian parents ...... we drive Lambo's and Ferrari's , lol pfft

There are 40 odd car makes in Oz viaing to get your dollar, we should be happy to have choice in this mature Australian market,
because companies don't really start up in Oz because our minds are already set.

So you'd be grateful to only have a choice between Coles or woolies to by groceries ......

The biggest gripe would be that Toyota and Nissan read the Australian psyche better then Holden and gave Australians the cars they wanted.

Some may discount or not want to hear what I'm about to say especially those who are comfortable with putting their love ones in cheaper cars eg Hyundai's & the like!!
My niece was involved in a fairly serious car accident where she went nose to tail with another car traveling on a motorway in Qld doing just on 90km/h in a 4yr old Getz
that was serviced by the dealer as specified.
On impact the driver airbag failed to deploy, passenger airbag failed to deploy. Both driver & passenger came out of vehicle with considerable upper body injuries.
The parents consulted the authorities @ the scene & they mentioned that "It is not unusual in these type of cars for the bags not to deploy"!!!
Be warned by cheap @ your Peril!! Our current SRS air bags has one of the Worlds best systems.

I was thinking exactly the same, a four year guarantee of work would be perfect for me. That said while Holden may be saying local manufacture until late 2017, I don't think every employee is guaranteed their job is safe for 4 years. Given the normal life cycles of Commodore platforms is nearer to 9 years I'm doubtful that VF even with a series II would run to the end of 2017, that would be 11 years for VE/ VF.
