Unhappy How do I stop "pop ups"?

I don't know much about computers, so I would like some help please.
Just recently, I've started getting all sorts of "pop ups" on our computer, some a 2" strip down the lhs of screen, some down the rhs, sometimes the full screen, most have an "X" to get rid of them, but they keep coming back, and they drastically slow down the computer.
Wifey says we have Internet explorer 9.0.06 256bit. Windows Vista Home Premium.
Can anyone out there help me to get rid of these "Pop Ups"?
Thank You, from a computer "Nerd", Pckles.

I had the same pickles, and was reading to blast LS1 thinking it was a new format, what it was, was I had accidently down loaded an addon when I was trying to download other software. Go into "control panel" then into "programs and features" that will compile a list of all programs on your computer, the top one should be the most recent date. If is not something you reconise, then that will most likly be your culprit. It will most likely be the top one. click on it and then click uninstall and you should be all good

I have found installing Mozilla Firefox as my browser has helped, it has a popup blocker built in, not perfect but is a lot better.

Rest assured!!!, there will never ever be pop-ups or the like ever incorporated into this forum/site. I loathe pop-ups with a passion and it will be a cold day in hell as they pry the keys for the site from my hands over my cold, dead body before such an abomination is ever considered even in jest !!!
