    Licensing

Hi folks, does anyone have any info regarding special permits in WA to move modified vehicles (my track car) between home, track and my mechanics workshop? I can't make head or tail of the licensing website. Although my car is currently registered its getting to the point where if I got picked up I wouldn't get it passed and it would become unlicensed. I can't afford a trailer and don't have anything to tow it with anyway and I've heard there may be some sort of permit which allows the movement of these types of vehicles as long as it's for certain purposes. I want to get a roll cage, strip the car right back etc etc.

The only permit you can get to move it are for licensing purposes. Ie to get it inspected or to go to the mechanic's for repairs in order to eventually become licenced.

    http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licen...ent-permit.asp

If it's unroadworthy, you can't drive it on the street legally. There's no permit to drive a race car to the track. You either have to modify it legally or de-rego it and trailer it everywhere. If you are going to keep it legal, you should apply for a modification permit before modifying it.

I'm not sure how club rego works and/or if its still available but may be something worth looking in to?

The process for vehicle modification is laid out on the transport website. There's a form to download and fill out regarding potential/planned modification, they'll then say yay or nay and if any of it needs to be signed off by an engineer. It's a long process...

Ok I've got the form. I wonder what sort of stuff they will allow? Do you reckon stripped interior, roll cage, bucket seats and harness would be possible? I think I can get passed the suspension as I can just set the coilovers high, put the original springs in the back. Not sure what they'll think of the a/c and heating all ripped out...

    Re: Licensing

There's a big difference between being licensed and being legal.
Mr Plod may not take kindly and canary it, so they will need to pull it all out to get it off.
Then there is Mr Insurance, who can simply say "claim denied", hopefully it's not a public liability claim that can run into the millions...

    Re: Licensing

I understand some of these vehicles may not be street legal but the sheer number and quality of them getting around tells me that at least some of them have some sort of licensing support. Possible?

    Re: Licensing

I believe you can possibly get a street legal cage in WA, I just can't remember the exact requirements for it. Pretty sure the side bars need to be removable or something along those lines, so they're not in place when driven on the street and you can just bolt them in at the track. It can't be a full 6 point cage, so depending on whatever racing rules apply, if that's what's required then you can't keep the car legal. Speak to Adam at Cronic's, he's full bottle on this type of stuff.

Not sure how you'll go with a stripped interior, you need to be wary of removing panels/parts that are designed to protect you in a crash.

You can run a harness but it can't interfere with the factory lap sash belt or any air bags.

I'd suggest having a good read of the ADR's, vehicle standards etc. It should be pretty well laid out in there, what you can and can't do.

    Re: Licensing

Yes this is all sounding very difficult. Is there a workshop in Perth can deal with these sorts of mods (cages, stripping interior etc) and get them passed legally?

    Re: Licensing

As I mentioned earlier, speak to Adam at Cronic's but there's a few places that can build you a cage
