plasma TV's do they have a coating on the screen?

OK, brainfart moment. I've inadvertantly cleaned my plasma screen with windex (Samsung). My one year old left smudgy fingerprints on the bottom of it and I tried to clean it off. I now have a polished section of TV and then promptly noticed a white powder lifting onto my cloth.

Question is have I damaged some sort of coating on the screen or have I just lifted 5 years of dust and grime off the TV? The remaining 'coating' in the polished section seems to lift off fairly easily with a bit of rubbing or light scratching with the fingernail. Do I leave it and live with it or do I try and 'restore' the screen?

The white powder would be ammonia residue from the windex. I would go to Kmart and buy an lcd cleaning kit for 10-20.00 and give it a good clean over to get rid of the windex.

The entire screen is dull while the windexed section is polished. The TV has, as far as I am aware, never had winded on it before.

Cut n polish would be way to aggressive wouldn't it? I just tried some lenses cleaner with a microfiber cloth and it pretty much did nothing. Would the TV kit be the same thing?

Don't cut and polish .. The lcd kit is just very mild and gets rid of screen gunk. I run it over my plasma once a month to clean fingers and dog nose smudges off

Are you not supposed to use Windex on a plasma screen?
I've always use it on my Panasonic plasma and never noticed any issues.

I've just used a slightly damp microfibre cloth, never chemical, even when the kids decide to use it like an ipad, with what ever they've been eating painted all over the screen.

Had our Pioneer for 7yrs & was told to use nothing but the cloth they supplied & no other product. As a matter of fact the screen has never been touched.

Yeah I was always told to only use a microfibre cloth to remove finger prints / smudge marks and only use water on the microfibre cloth if required

The ammonia in the Windex has potentially stripped off one of the anti-reflective coatings on the panel. These days they are generally wedged between the panels layers of glass but earlier on they simply applied it to the screens surface. Windex is a terrible product and should be thrown in your nearest bin, also not good for tinted windows.

Use a damp microfibre cloth and if you need to use something to remove greasy finger prints use something like baby shampoo or methylated spirits and water mix, make sure it is a very mild solution.

Bugger that's what I figured. Ah well, it still looks OK when the TV is on. Its only noticeable and I do mean noticeable during the day when viewing from an angle. Off it looks even worse. It is a 5 year old TV and is still going great. When we eventually upgrade this one is going outside to the BBQ area.

On the bright side, big screens are cheap as chips. Picked up a new 60" pioneer led for under 1k a month back for the kids room, so maybe a good excuse for you to go shopping

Unfortunately they are not the same old Pioneer quality and reference panel they once were, for some reason they are re-badging different panels and selling them off. Maybe one day they will return to the top where they belong. I haven't seen any in the shops so i have no idea how good they are, what's they quality like?
