The reason this is such a big thing is that VW deliberately broke the law and misled both government agencies and customers. They put themselves up as being able to produce fuel efficient, powerful, clean diesels. Nothing could be further from the truth. The NOx emissions and fine particles are extremely dangerous and reported in the UK to be responsible for thousands of deaths every year, not to mention other health issues like autism in kids, etc. That is why the governments have put legislation in to lower the emissions. VW didn't want to produce lower powered, less efficient diesels so circumvented this by their deception. Make no mistake this is going to cost them big time. Imagine the customers who have to have their vehicles corrected, only to find they are using more fuel and have less power. Would you be happy? What gets me is that they thought they could get away with it. Deliberate deception always come out in the end, whether by a disgruntled employee or purely by accident in this case. Trust and reputation has been severely damaged.

Never going to happen, I read somewhere that it was harder and harder for them to meet emissions targets and small turbo petrol engines are the way forward for the moment.

Be easier for every one concerned if we just scraped the emissions tests and started again cause it probably effects every modern diesel car on the planet. But no governments are going to want the money from fines and the consumer is going to want the money from class actions.

About time Australia is no longer a door mat and fed BS from VW (per usual practice), VW Global & especially VW Australia these BS artists should pay up as it Not what was sold!, what with petrol engines that drink a litre of oil per 1000km, the famous DSG fiasco, people buying them thinking they are built in Germany (Many are not)

Maybe they will have to start discounting the VW brand to shift metal, after people will buy if the price is right (low enough) no matter how bloody alwful this mess of a brand's will get.

I have run out of pop corn reading all the news on VW, simply amazing they got away with it for so long as they did.
It says a lot of industries supervising themselves. Sadly in the end this is why we need independent tests and lemon laws to keep bastards as these honest.
If you can't trust the Germans then the mind only boggles as what games and cheats everyone else is up to.
