    Time to switch oils?

    Hi all,

I need a bit of advice on what to do with the oil in my ls1. Its got about 20k on it since being rebuilt, having been run on Castrol Magnatec 10-40 before and after the rebuild. IJ was very impressed with the condition of the internals given it had about 260k on it, which was a big tick for the magnatec.

Now that its rebuilt with a mild cam, it has that sewing machine noise coming from the valves which does my head in a bit, particularly when the windows are down. Will switching to the Castrol Edge 10-60 (or anything else?) quiet down the valve noise, and if so do I need to take any precautions when switching from a semi to full synthetic??

    Cheers,

    Jarrod

Very surprised yours ran fine on magnatec rubbish! Is known to gum up the insides of ally engines even if changed before specified intervals.
I won't use anything but Full Synth in my engines & have no issues. No precautions at all in changing to synth either. Surprised Ian didn't recommend using Penrite 10-60 as he & I both use same.

    Time to switch oils?

Nothing wrong with Magnatec. But yep 10w60 for a cammed application is a good idea with the increased vslvetrain load. No issues switching between mineral or synthetic. Thats a total myth

Magntec is a great oil for the LS1, never a issue with the 5 I had as Macca said, proven over the years

What lifters you running, 10w60 is good but it my model tie bar lifters I run 5w40 as recommended by morel. Generally the LS has a noisy top end.

The cam profile is likely causing your valve train noise, oil type/viscosity probably won't make much if any difference, just stick with Magnatec if you're happy with it. I have an aftermarket cam, lifters and springs using LS30 (5W30) and my valve train is quiet.

with ya there on the Magnatec.. went from the always recommended by Holden Mobil 1 to it
and the thing sounded like a loud sewing machine. Terrible, ran it for 1000km couldn't stand
and dumped it for Penrite 10-60
silence.... (oh and a steadier oil pressure at idle)

I've dropped magnatec out and it was like water, never again.

I've used Penrite for years now in different cars and very happy. Castrol won't get my money again

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think ill give a 10-60 a go this time around and see if there's an improvement, otherwise I may stick with magnatec

    Re: Time to switch oils?

Ive pretty much always run Magnatec, every time I have tried something else as recommended on forums my car has sounded like a diesel so its back to Magnatec I go and quiet again.

I did like you on my first LS1 & from 20K was changing oil every 5-6K ran quiet as well though around 90K the oil pressure started dropping, on tear down found out a terrible amount of gum deposits from the Magnatec as nothing else were used! No more mineral oil for me

complete opposite here, swapped out the horrible watery mobil 1 in my VY HSV(back in the day) sounded like a sewing machine for magnatec so much better. even our afm VE ran on magnatec to stop lifter noises.

Pulled my Vy SV8 apart for cam install heads off etc and no deposits clean as and always run on magnatec 5k changes.
