Some great looking cars that go like shit off a shovel. For me though a large percentage of the joy I get from my cars is the sound they make. I sometimes even start my Calais in the shed, crack a beer and just listen to the blower whine and exhaust note. I reckon if it was silent it would not matter if it got from 0-100 in 1 second I would still move it on.

Ship fires are bad at the best of times, but would not want to be fighting this one.

New Zealand announces road-user tax for electric vehicles…

    18 September 2023

    https://www.drive.com.au/news/new-ze...road-user-tax/

    Victoria’s electric-car road-user charges to increase from 1 July 2023…

    23 June 2023

    https://www.drive.com.au/news/victor...m-1-july-2023/

“ In March 2023, it was reported 243 electrified vehicles had been deregistered by VicRoads after owners failed to submit their odometer readings and pay the distance-based fee – despite many being unaware of the requirement.

The introduction of the higher road-user charge comes after the Victorian Government scrapped its $3000 electric-vehicle subsidy for new-car purchases.

The controversial road-user charge is currently being challenged in the High Court by two Victorian motorists – with backing from the Federal Government – in what is being called the biggest constitutional fight in a quarter of a century.

The changes mean electric-car owners will soon pay 12 per cent more per kilometre than when the road-user charge was introduced two years ago, while plug-in hybrid owners will soon pay 15 per cent more per kilometre.

Meanwhile, Attorneys-General from all other Australian states and territories have intervened in the case, throwing their support behind Victoria's defence.“

More reasons I’ll never buy an Electric / Plug in Hybrid vehicle…

    Re: The truth about EV's

Here's my take on what is playing out. These are all heavy handed ways by Governments of all levels of recouping tax from electric car owners that petrol car owners already pay. The fuel excise (tax) is currently 48.8 cents per litre! Wait until they try and recoup that one.

The state Government's know that they're going to lose revenue with the move from petrol to electric cars under existing tax mechanisms. So, Taxes that we all pay already if we own a petrol car.

The state Government's want to stake their claim now, have it accepted as a tax that is part of the cost of a vehicle by the public. Sort of like people just accepted things like 3 X 3 road taxes in the past as part of the cost of running a vehicle (yeah, 3 years ...). We know that one thing Government will make sure we pay is taxes...

They clearly believe that the change to electric will be at a fairly rapid rate and it's time to act now. To an extent, that may be true, as nearly all the global manufacturers are planning the end of their petrol powered cars. Just a few old petrol models being made for 3rd world countries with basically no emissions restrictions. A decent number of people buy cars new every 2 to 5 years. It will be a lot of electric cars coming on line quickly.

The closest comparison is probably digital mobile phones. Australia was actually more suited to analog. However, we had to follow the rest of the world, as we wouldn't be manufacturing our own handsets, let alone the network hardware and technology behind them. Just like our iPhones and Android devices, we buy our cars and fuel from overseas, so we will buy what the rest of the world does.

However, I can certainly understand why many would not want to buy electric with the Victorian scheme, it's absolute garbage!

Scottish couple facing $33k repair bill after driving Tesla in heavy rain…

    18th October 2023

    https://7news.com.au/motoring/scotti...c-12231962.amp

These EV’s aren’t going to age too well, when vast amounts of people will be off loading their EV’s prior to battery replacement being required and their wiz bang EV’s will be worthless, as no one will want to buy a second hand EV requiring a “ Very Expensive” new battery and after the Tesla 8 year limited battery warranty expires…

    Tesla Limited Battery Warranty below…

“ Flooding the battery “ voids the warranty, not covered…

“ The energy capacity of the replacement battery under warranty will be at least equal to that of the original battery before the failure occurred, and taking into consideration the age and mileage of the EV.”

So… your replacement limited warranty battery won’t be a brand new full capacity battery unless the battery fails on the first day of ownership and only then your’ll get a brand new full capacity battery…

I am seeing more and more of them in my daily commute with accident damage also. One I see daily has the rear quarter stoved in, the front quarter with a large dent and RHS DRL no longer working. Seen this one in this state for over a Month. Could be they do not give a fk, or are they hard to get repaired?

Love the bit about Flaky thin paint lol, just what you want in Australia. Will look like an early model Commodore in a couple of years with no paint left.

    Re: The truth about EV's

I saw that article. Will be interesting to see how that plays out. I think someone is being stooged and I think it may be the Scottish journalist... Either way, a Tesla battery for a model 3 is about $16k AUD. I can't see why a Y would be much more. Still crazy you say? Well, it's the equivalent of a whole new engine in a petrol car. Want to price up a new engine for a BMW or Mercedes and see how it compares? I was told a $28k AUD for a 3 series. Heck, a CVT gearbox replacement on a 5 year old X-Trail through your local Nissan dealer is apparently over $12k. You need to compare apples with apples. The Tesla certainly has a much longer battery warranty than BMW has on its engines or Nissan on its gearboxes...

To be fair, we get the Chinese built Tesla's , have better paint than the US built cars Europe get from what I've seen. Especially better than the old Tesla that James May has.

I see that the Victorian "EV Road User Tax" has been ruled "unconstitutional".

    Re: The truth about EV's

... there has been a bit of an issue with EVs since they came out and really not one spoken about until now.

I have known about this for 12 months from a contact at Pirelli in Sydney and now the Pirelli Aust Technical
Manager has outed it, EVs and tyres are not good buddies

    why so?
Teslas have 700nm of torque and eat tyres, most EVs accelerate very quickly and so tyre life is short

People are trying to fit 'normal' tyres to EVs to replace the worn out originals .. not a match made in heaven

I won't post the article here as it is long, way long... but worth the read
