Well at least that is a quick, easy, cheap thing to fix.
I would always change both at the same time.

Minor problem with the Ute.
Broke the rhs drive shaft, me to the rescue and the RAA.

It looks like it has been replaced its not a factory one, but it is not in a good way.
Broke one bolt bent 3 and the stuffed the threads on the others.
And the shaft it's bolted to is rooted.
Now my job to find bits and fix it.
And half the bolts on the outer were loose as well.
Is there any difference in the drive shafts v8 and 6 ??
I assume they would be the same ..drive shaft.jpgThis thing.jpgOOps.jpg

As far as I remember they are the same.![]()
So had it running again ,but not know it's in bits again .
Drive shaft is fine ,but what i didn't know is the splined shafts the drive shaft bolts 2 on the diff side are 2 different lengths needless to say it didn't last long ,one big bang in 1st gear on Salisbury Hwy managed to get it home no drive or very little .
Had to push it up the drive way ,to old for this shit .
Anyhoo pulled the backing plate off the diff ,someone had used JB weld to put one of the sensors back on the backing plate ,well that fell off .
Now the good bit pinion and crown wheel are ok there was plastic in the diff when i drained it orange in color no metal that i could see and fook me it's got a 2.87 ratio diff in it exactly what the sticker says ,now i know why it went like the clappers when you got up it in first gear .
Makes sense as there is no way you can use 6th gear at all with the cam it has in it .
To old for rolling around under cars ,but i have done this so far no help.
Very strange, I have only ever heard of that 2.87 ratio in 6 cylinder Commodores.
AFAIK. Factory ratios in Holden Commodore VT II - VZ Gen III V8's was 3.07 in a 4 speed auto or a 3.46 in a 6 speed manual as stock.
(HSV models had some even shorter gear diffs available)
I wonder if someone might have put a 6 cyl diff in it at some stage perhaps? (The 6 cyl diff had smaller / weaker parts inside them.)
You have been busy!![]()
Thanks ,no car stuff today going to see what i can find diff wise in a 3.46 ,the rest can wait until i get a bit of help.
One drive shaft to remove unbolt the tailshaft and the 4 bolts that hold the diff in.
Quick update ,we picked up a 3.7 lastnight just have to remove the one that's in it and replace it ,to old to fat to be under cars in driveways these days but have no other way not to sure when it will get done might have to enlist some help from some friends to do this we will see.
Kyle is busy the next 2 weekends and i don't want it in the driveway i have jobs on cars to do its in the way .
Well i give up now .
2 driveshaft bolts will not budge at all on the outside inside ones are just as bad and there is no way in hell can i crack the 4 bolts that hold the diff in .
Time for extra help ,see if i can find someone to help.
I have used a meter long breaker bar with a single hex impact socket in the past
or you could also try a rattle gun mate!
The single hex socket is most important because a double hex will not grab as firm.![]()
