    Rusted Brake Hose

Not LS related I know, but I thought I would share this as a lot of people have a lot of different daily,s on here no doubt. Attached is a photo of the brake line that was taken off my wife's VW Golf GTI Performance yesterday. Long story short it was in for tyre's and the fitters noticed the right rear brake hose pissing fluid onto the floor. Fortunately the tyre place I use is across the car park from the mechanic I also use, so he was able to quickly diagnose and order a replacement overnight from VW in Melbourne (nothing either aftermarket or OEM in Adelaide). Anyhow, as you may be able to see on the photo, water collects in the upside down rubber boot, cannot escape and rots the line over time. The replacement hose does not have the boot. The other 3 lines on the car have the boot, but you cannot see if the same is happening until it fails and falls apart and it is too late by then. I have already ordered replacement braided hoses for the car as I just don't feel confident driving it now and will be taking the faulty hose the VW today to see what they say. Anyhow, sorry for the short story long.

PS...The car has 48,000km on it.

They all have a dual braking system these days Rod.

Most likely it would have lost some fluid & the brake fluid low warning light would have gone on

before it would have even got a low pedal but it is all stuff you don't need.

they don't do /need under ADRs duel REAR brake circuits...

and if they go.. burst let me tell you, vehicles take way too long to stop on a long pedal with
    front brakes only

As I found out... thankfully only at low speed in the paddock at PI

Smitty, just to be clear, when I said "dual" I meant separate front & rear braking systems.

I got what you meant Ed, which is exactly what Geoff's young mechanic told me when I picked it up. I would have been far more hesitant to drive it out of there with 3 original brake hoses in place if he had not told me that.

On a side note, I ended up getting Michelin Pilot Sport 4's put on the car. Everyone talks them up, including Mighty Car Mods. All I can say is fkn wow. They are bloody awesome.
Having been a Bridgstone RE003 user for quite a while the extra coin spent on the Michelin's was well and truly worth it. Would I put them on my ute, probably not, but on a car like the GTI it has transformed it.

Mate, I work for Michelin (and have done for the past 20 years ........ Shhhhhhhh). I also used to be a Bridgestone man back in the day but since using Pilot Sports (SuperSports, PS2's. PS3's and PS4's), I would never use another tyre on any of my family cars (even if I was no longer working for them, I would still use them....). They may not be the best wet weather tyre on the market, they may not be the best dry weather tyre on the market, they may not be the longest wearing tyre on the market BUT, they ARE the best ALL ROUND performance tyre you can get for money in my opinion...).

The PS5's are now out bloke ......... wait till you have a crack on those ........ they are step UP on the PS4's and worth every bloody cent.

Just my 2 cents worth ........ I am not what you would call a 'company man' by any means, but god damn they make a bloody good product ........ I make sure all my extended family and friends run them as well ......... I feel that strongly about them!

    Re: Rusted Brake Hose

    100% I would recommend them!

I've religiously put them on my VYII SS Wagon ... 360rwkw, Blown baby ......... I love them and they have never let me down .... Wet or Dry. I'm not a hoon (too old for that crap) but I do give the O'l wags a pretty hard time every now and then and I do enjoy 'driving in the rain' and on the twisites ......... they hang on like Shite to a blanket (but like any tyre, you F around too much and you do find out .... LOL). I'm no Peter Brock or by any means an expert but I rek'n they are the bomb and they look bloody good too to be honest.

If your in Melb and serious about giving them a go ....... PM me, I might be able to help you out.... WINK.

P.S. That goes for all you legends who have helped me out over the years on here; If you're looking for tyres and I can help, I'll do my best.

Hey Franga, thanks for the great info. I ended up going the 4s which I have been advised sits above the PS 4 and 5. Performance tests that I read seem to back this up. I did price a set for back of my Calais in 275 20's but ended up going back to Semi Slick tyres on that for summer.

G'day mate, I have not run the 4(S) as they do not do an 18" version but I am led to believe that they are similar to the SuperSports (which I have run in the past). My understanding is the S (and the SuperSports) are a summer tyre and specifically designed for dry conditions and they also wear a little quicker as they are a lot softer (I have a mate who runs the S and he loves them though). The PS4's and PS5's are an all rounder and designed for all conditions wet and dry. When I ran the SuperSports I did find that the tyre life was not as great and they did wear considerably quicker than the PS4's - but as I say, I have no real life experience with the PS4(S) due to size of my rims (18"). Either way man, I think you will love them. The performance of the entire Pilot Sport range is awesome - just depends on what you are looking for. As I live in the mountains in Vic, wet weather driving is a major focus for me (and for some reason I get a little extra buzz driving in the wet.........). Big brakes, good suspension and great tyres make for a huge confidence lift when driving around up here (sometimes I might get a little over confident as a result ........... Shhhhhhhh).......

I am very mindful these days of driving a little too hard in the wet, as I do tend to go just little bit harder when it rains for some reason .......... as IJ told me not long ago after he rebuilt my A4 ......... "that's a lot of engine you got mate, would be shame to fark it all up ........ go easy in the wet" ...........
