i run a 255 tyre on the rear with a stock vx ss 17inch rim.... it looks the same as the 235.. and i mean the same. only when veiw from behind you may notice its alittle wider! next ill go a 275 i think...
Since no one has answered this directly the 285s are virtually the same size as the 275s. 6mm taller (1% difference) so don't do anything. I am running 285s (20s) on the back of my E2.
285 25 on the otherhand is about 24mm smaller (4%) than stock so he gave you a bum steer there. Key things to note with tyres is that in most states you can go +15mm in diameter. -25mm in diameter. Increase the track by up to 25mm. Cannot decrease the track. And the tyres cannot foul the guards or suspension and be of the same or greater load and speed rating. Check your local Dept against Transport website.
Use one of the many web sites to check what you are doing...

Depending on the state the rules differ. As mentioned different tyres make different actual widths. I have seen 245 smaller in actual width than some 225s. On the other hand I have seen a set of 265 measure 280 wide in actual width.
Generally speaking
8 inch rim you can run between 225 and 255.
9.5 inch can run from 245 to 285.
Most tyre shops wont fit tyres to rims outside this range unless you know them well, they dont care or have the tyre fitted to the rims only (and not on the car).
Nothing wrong with making people aware what their state rules are as there are different rules, people that get the cars engineered or signed off as legal and on and on
Of course you can fit bigger tyres to rims and as above you can fit massive tyres on the rims but check with your local state rules on the internet or call them up. If people choose to run bigger and are ok with it (safety, practicability and legally), then so be it.
Mate, i really can't understand why you would even consider fitting over sized tyres to undersized rims! is it a 'mental state' of mind.
'Look at me' 'look at me'
The rim will roll on the tyre when cornering hard due to the 'excessive' side wall play.
You are 41yo, but are trying to give advice to others on here about tyre to rim fitment with the mind of a 'teen boy racer' mentality.
There is nothing safe in any way in what you are doing, infact it's just plain![]()
Get of ya high horse, under no circumstances did I say it was legal etc etc , I said it can be done..
And another thing is everything on your VN legal ?????.
Let's all go out and buy the same car and all do the same mods and be Sheep oh sorry that's you.
Individuality is something you obviously know fark all about and that is what is great about the car scene.
Also another thing i get Fark all sidewall flex but hey you know that cause you have seen my car running around a circuit...
Under a bonnet listening for knock with my earmuffs on
You really are quite the tosser aren't you!
All mods on my car of which there are many are certified, as yes i do race it on Pukekohe with semi skicks and a time of 1m 9.02 to 1m 9.08
I 'didn't' say or even care whether your cars legal as i don't live in your flooded, burnt land.
'Individuality' fuk, i was the 1st person in Australasia with the VN/VS chassis back in 02 to fit an LS1![]()
Mostly all of my cars have been individual due to being from a hotrodding back ground.
You sir, have a run of the mill cheque book car from a dealer and that is all.
OH yea, with over size tyres and a brain dead owner.![]()
