On the same note I'm actually interested in what you put together for it....
Too true...I actually got sick of all the racers that dont race saying how weak the thing was....and sure enough it needs serious help in the power department, it is bloody slow - but there is SOME basis there to build a decent car out of. I dont think its ever going to be a gazillion kilowatt thing, and sure enough the scene will quickly be littered in blown engines once the boosted kits are out there, you only need to look back through MX5, 350Z etc turbo kits to know that trying to squeeze these things too hard will end in tears. It comes down to hp per cube, no rocket science there.

Our aim is 160kw (Mainline) at the wheels NA, and a tune level that puts it into the low 14s down the 1/4- that may be enough, but it WONT be easy to do. The DI mapping in these things is optimised to buggery. More than that it will be a quick track/hillclimb car, and thankfully we have some dealer backing to put together exactly this kind of car. ADR approval would also be nice, but also extremely difficult in this modern age (EuroIII was hard enough!)

Toyota 86 isnt a fast car. It isnt a ground breaking car.
What it is - is something fresh and new rather than the same re-heated TV dinner all over again. Maybe a change is as good as a holiday? And for some thats enough
For us the challenge of trying to make the thing go via innovation rather than opening the parts catalog is the whole essence of the project.

While I doubt I'll ever own one I like the idea of the car. Many will go the boosted route but I would keep the car light and go NA.
Modern cars a full of crap you can ditch to save weight, strip the car right out, add a suitable cage as well as individual throttle bodies, cams, heads and pipes that are way too big for a daily driver and you have a very cool track day or hill climb car with a cranky NA sound, would be heaps of fun even if it wasn't the fastest thing in the paddock.

Sounds like a good package will eventuate from it. I think the allure to it is as you say it is something new and maybe a serious look over an mx5 which apart from a couple of euros really has no competition.

Something that has the handling improved, some decent tires, larger brakes and that extra poke to make things more exciting would be a selling point. From what I've seen it's being marketed in Oz to the small minority who knew a little on the AE86, to the rest it's a Toyota/Subaru hybrid. Will be interesting to see who is behind the wheels of them.

E85, especially in Victoria, is getting more and more accessible so would be good to see tuning packages taking advantage of this.

Cracking the bootloader of these things to download them is proving to be a PITA (same as late model Subaru diesel/nextgen WRX), but we are confident we will have some software for these in the next couple of weeks to let the engine mapping begin. Plenty of tricks in the AVCS camshaft mapping it would seem

Considering the weight (1200 kg) and power (147kw) of these things, I am surprised that they are no quicker 0-100 than a Honda Accord Euro (man), which has the same power (albeit a bit more torque) but weighs close to 400 kg more

    Re: Toyota 86

This thread is full of people who have missed the point.

It's a small, light, quick enough RWD car. For $30k. Nobody else does anything even vaguely comparable for the money. It strikes me as the perfect drive-to-work car, with the bonus that it will do well out in the hills on weekends. It is not one for the traffic light manliness-proving crowd. Frankly I like it because it does away with the usual bullshit that cars seem to be infested with these days, especially in the more basic $30k GT version, and leaves you with the stuff that should matter to car guys.

I am sure an 86 wouldn't keep up with my SS away from the lights, but I'm equally sure my SS wouldn't keep up with a well-driven 86 in the hills. What remains to be seen is who out of the two drivers has the most fun.
    2007 VE SS M6 - Ignition
    2013 JH Cruze SRi M6 - Redhot
1971 VW Super Beetle - Moss Green
