The dreaded tick tick tick of noisy lifters - VE SS

    Hi all,

well my VE SS MY10 manual has started to tick tick tick and it's quite loud. It now has 110,000km with a cam, exhaust, etc, which was put in at about 40,000. Seems from reading on here that the lifters can go at around 40-60,000km. Bummer.

My question is, apart from a probable new cam, etc, etc, I'm asking for some tie bar lifters to fix it for once and for all. Good idea? Is there anything else that would be a good idea to upgrade or do, whilst the heads are off?

Been quoted a possible 4K all up, incluing the re-tune. Sound reasonable?

    Thanks

4k sounds about right depending on the quality of parts used. I do not however recommend you supply any parts to your installer! Any parts supplied by you will get no warranty from your installer.

Just curious, why would you need a new cam? Are you going for something with a different spec or is the cam damaged? Can't you just do the lifters?

    Sorry for my ignorance

    Cheers

The cam is one of Oztracks and I dont know the exact specs. The new tuner said he hopes the cam is OK and that will save me $500 or so, but can't guarantee it. More than likely not. They are mostly damaged he said (Is that true or not?). So if it's damaged Ive asked him to get one similar to what's in there now (if he's able), or just put another in. The tune aint great, hence either way Im getting him to re-tune it. Im not supplying anything.

If there's any chance of the heads having to come off again down the track spend a little extra now up front to get ARP head bolts and Cometic head gaskets which can all be reused. GM head bolts and head gaskets are single use only. When I had mine done I did that and it's already paid off when I had a lifter issue and the heads shaved slightly.

What cam was your Oztrack and what do you have now?
I've always had a lite tick when cold even before I fitted new cam, probably should have replaced the lifters but couldn't be bothered.
If I do have to do the Lifters will go with tie bar also but will do a head and cam package at same time, engine has 137K.

Although not really told what the specs were from Oztrack I recall it was about 224/228?? So the Walkinshaw guy couldnt get the exact specs from Steve, so put in one that was about the same. So it originally had 340 at the wheels. 80,000km later and after the new work, it has 334, so thats not bad. Again I dont know the exact specs, but this time I'll find out for sure. Car runs alot smoother now too.
