    WH Steering Rack

    Evening Gents,

Have recently took out my buggered Power Steering Rack and purchased a fully rebuilt one ready to instal.

Have got most of it in, but the part that has me cursing and swearing, is putting the steering knuckle shaft onto the rack itself. It is where the bolt goes through with the nut.

Any tips on easiest/simplest way of getting it on?

Might sound like a stupid question, but i pulled up stumps now after a long work day and thought tackle it tomorrow arvo.

    Thanks

    Jamie

From memory, is that the bolt with machine side that only goes in one way correctly? And has to sit in the groove on the rack splines? Its actually a nut and pin.
When I fitted pacemakers to my WH I remember getting the shits with it, until I realized I had it in the wrong orientation, then it dropped straight in.
Just make sure you have the groove aligned with the pin.

If you've turned the steering wheel at all while it's been apart make sure you gently turn it to full lock left then count turns to full lock right, turn it back halfway before hokking it to the rack or you risk damaging the clockspring.

Turn the Flat on the shaft so it faces the rear of the car, turn the Knuckle so the open end faces the rear and it'll slot straight on.

Thanks guys for the input, yes it is the one that fits in one way. I will try it tonight

IJ Assuming your referring to the clockspring in the steering wheel itself being damaged? My ignorance, is turning the wheel too fast will damage it?

The Clockspring has from memory about 5 turns lock to lock the Rack a bit over 3, what can happen if you turn it hard without the Rack attached you can over travel the spring and damage it, likewise if the rack is straight ahead but you have turned the steering wheel a couple of turns before connecting it to the rack you can over travel the spring and damage it when you go full lock driving.

    Re: WH Steering Rack

Guys, got it all in today, made in easier with your instructions.

Now, last bolt left, to bolt the steering flange in. So it is locked in, now the bolt wont seem to go in all the way, it is close.

    Any other tips....

Next step after this is wheel alignment....

The weird ass bolt with the diamond section middle part?

There's a safety clip on the steering knuckle you need to lift a bit so the head of the bolt will go right down, the bolt can only go one way as I'm sure you've found already
