    Alternator for LS1 (HTV1900)

Hi folks, looking for some advice; My alternator has shit itself (bugger, 1 day after I had to rebuild my tail shaft too ........... wife is NOT happy.... DOH!) and I need to source and fit a new one.

Have been poking around and OEM Holden (so I have been told) are up near $500+, have had a look on Evil Bay and you can get 'Genuine' 140A for $200 -> $290

Can I get peeps thoughts on this; I have a blown application and worry more than I should over AFR's etc (they are now obviously all over the place b/c of the alternator). SO, my wonderful wags is now locked down until I can sort the alternator.

Any advice or 'be careful of......' hints I should know before trying to source one (where/how much is too much/things to be wary of/installing gotya's).

    Thanks in advance,

I'd check the alternator positive wire isn't the cause of the problem. I bought a new genuine alternator and realised when fitting it that the positive wire was only holding on by a few strands.
The old alternator turned out to be fine, just the wire needed replacing.

So, I dug up and followed your instructions tonight (went out and grabbed an Alternator - Cheers IJ.., even bought a replacement ratchet and a 13 and 15mm ring spanner ...............) now, bear in mind I am a complete nuff nuff on the tools (don't often get the chance or have the confidence to do simple stuff like this) and damn, thanks to these instructions and some good advice from some bloody decent folk, I was surprised how easy (and relatively quick the change over was).

I spent a fair bit of time 'looking' at everything (again and again) and checking what should go where (even took a few photos in case I 'forgot') and then launched into it (with my sphincter tighter than it should be) and I had it all back together in about 1 and half hours (stoked). Should have spent more attention 'on the block coolant pipe' part ...................... ooooops, but you get that when your freaking just a little.

I had previously read a couple of threads on how other folk had removed the alternator and by far, taking the fans out made it sooooo much easier (I ended up taking the top hose off the radiator to fit the fans through - hence the fluid mess ...... ooooops - won't make that mistake again.....).

    So a big thanks Listy,

All I have to do now is cross my fingers I didn't F something up and can make to drive into work and home again tomorrow.

Cheers as usual to all for the advice.

Hope it passed the "smoke test"

All wiring is full of smoke occasionally it breaks and comes out
