    Custom old-school Exhaust

    Hey guys

I'm sorry if this question has been done and answered to death, BUT

I may be only 27 but I am an old school guy, and I was hoping to get some opinions on my idea for a custom exhaust. I have a stock (apart from a twin 3" X force cat back system that came with the car) 2004 VY Clubsport 6sp manual. I originally had (and still have but for sale) an auto VS Clubby with an old school style twin two inch exhaust and was thinking of doing a 2 1/2 inch version for the VY.

For headers I want to use HPC coated 1 3/4" 4 into 1's.
    Probably 200cpi 2 1/2" cats
Then a mandrel bent twin 2 1/2 system with straight through glass pack mufflers - leaning towards Magnaflow centre in/out glass packs.. Also like Genie Turbo and Berklee. On a side note, on the VS, Garth at the Muffler Shop put (in think) a Genie turbo (a centre in/out single perforated tube type muffler) for each bank. Gets that old school sound I want, that bop bop bop that comes from each pipe at unequal intervals. Rough and raunchy.
I don't want an X pipe /H pipe or any pipe that joins the banks together. Also no resonators. Just an old school system - 4 into 1 extractors, cats that do stuff all, a straight through muffler on each bank and tail pipes. That's it, no other mufflers, silencers, baffles, anything.

Yes I will be wanting to fit a bigger cam, OTR intake and 3.7 gears in the future, and I know that a 2 1/2 system will more than handle it. I also know that a well designed exhaust has the smallest pipe size that flows what the engine needs. Why stock LS1's have twin 3" systems is beyond me when I know for a fact that they are simply too big.

I understand that the sound I'm going for is unusual for a modern EFI V8 but that's what I want and I can't be the first or only guy to ever want this type of exhaust for an LS1 powered car.

    Your thoughts please.

You'll never get the exhaust note you're looking for due to the firing order...

For sure you’re not the Lone Ranger but sadly IJ. & Smitty are right.

If you want that old school sound like a 253, 308, 304 it isn’t going to happen with an LS engine.

You can however delete the x or h pipe and make an LS1 sound like a thong slapper.

Best exhaust i found after many trail and error attempts was the sureflo single 3.5" exhaust. Greg is fantastic to deal with too and will sort you out with extractors and cats.

Have had many people comment on the sound of my 3.5" Sureflo. I love the sound of it.

    Re: Custom old-school Exhaust

Had someone mention the other day that when I started my car after my night shift it rattled the windows in the office and there was a "WTF was that!" Oddly enough I used an app on the phone to measure db of standard exhaust with res removed (by previous owner, droned like a bastard) and the Sureflo 3.5" and the Sureflo was 3db quieter at idle. Sounds better at any RPM though and no drone.

The system I built for the Tonner matches the resonant frequency of the Shed at Idle

My VE does the same thing when its idling higher with low coolant temp, lucky it goes away when the RPM drops as the coolant comes up to temp otherwise I think it would drive me insane.

    Re: Custom old-school Exhaust

Also agree with what the guys are saying. You won't get an LS sounding like a 5L.

It will also drone like mad with around 2m of pipe behind the mufflers. If you want it loud, use louder middle mufflers (hotdogs or nothing at all) and a good resonator on the end.

I think you're writing a lot of off the shelf systems off based on the current, cheap x force that's on the car.

    Re: Custom old-school Exhaust

Thanks for all the replies, I understand everything that has been said. I know that the firing order does affect the tone, and yeah the way I worded it made it sound like I wanted the tone of the 5L in my VY. Never going to happen.

A thong slapper? I get what that means, and for some reason doesn't seem to bother me that much. Might be my appreciation for 253's as I had one in my first car.
I'm curious about the droning with long tail pipes though. I have heard of this before, but never been able to find a technical explanation.
It should be said that I have heard pretty much every off the shelf kit out there; X force, Hurricane, Di Fillipo, Sureflow, Redback and a few others, and I don't mean to sound too negative or hard to please here, I just don't like the sound of any of them, no matter what pipe size.

I will probably get the system that I want and see how it goes and although it took some time to convince Garth to do the twin 2", it ended up sounding just liked I hoped. In any case, I can always add an X or balance pipe and/or resonators later on if need be. Might sound stupid, but I use this philosophy on every car that I have. I have a HQ 2 door that will have a 496 big block running E85, and will use the exhaust it already has (twin 3" with Aero Chambers and X pipe), just take out the X pipe and bolt it back up.

All your thought, opinions and experiences are greatly appreciated. I may choose to ignore 99% of them and stubbornly do it my way, but the more info I can get the better.
