Hey guys and girls...
been on here for awhile thought i would introduce my car...
will get some pics up soon when i work out how to put them up..

VZ SS Thunder
20 inch verde kaos wheels
otr intake
6 speed manual
232/234 cam
pacemaker extractors, custom 3 inch exhaust.
custom engine covers
binnacle gauges
lowered on king springs
chev badge/grille
mafless tune
currently making 422.1rwhp 314.7 rwkw...
have had many problems getting her running sweet performance shop in perth did a absolutely rubbish tune and the car was backfiring hard to start and just a piece of shite to drive. currently getting it a mafless tune atm and have found it had 2 inlet manifold bolts missing and leaking oil from dodgy perth shop and have been told to expect some bigger numbers once the inlet manifold bolts get put back in as it was getting a lean spot when tuning on the dyno...

Thats a nice looking ute!

Sorry but everytime I see those big unit stickers I just think "wanker" to myself, its ruining a nice clean ute otherwise.

Saw nice Ute on the raod last night just outside the Casino, Atomic Maloo with plates: HSVPWR... I think... Anyone from here? Thing sounded incredible would love to know what work had been done.

Also spotted a VE stato drving down Lygon on my way home, plates were HSV400, thing sounded unreal... very nice cam. I know its not a UTE but still would love to know whats going on under the bonnet.

Do we have a "spotted" thread?

Guys I have a vz ss ute and have noticed in pics that guys are taking the engine covers off. What does this do and is it safe?

Pretty sure there is nothing wrong with taking the engine cover off...its just for looks i think. I lot of guys dont like them and believe they trap in heat which isnt a good thing...so by taking them off people believe they are letting their engine breath a little better.

Either way i dont think it makes a huge difference.

Its that, but also a lot of the over the radiator intakes dont allow the cover to fit...

After 4 hours of washing, and using Swirl Remover 2.0, needs something a bit stronger though, didn't quite get all the swirls out...
Removed the V8 badges as well, I reckon they looked a bit tacky. More smoother look anyway.

Twin 70mm Xforce rolled tips and the inside of them has perforations / baffle holes kind of look if that makes any sense

Wheels are staggered starcorps in shadow , fronts are 19x8.5s and rears are 19x 9.5 235/35 fronts and 255/30 rears

If anyone needs any info etc feel free to PM me and ill help you out no worries at all :)

Cheers mate , we made up a template and airsawed VERY carefully ( both sides as the tips are a lil big for the factory size cutout) and then just sanded it to finish it off - was very worried but am happy with the results

Hay guys im new to this forum so i hope i have posted this in the right area.

Ive finally found myself a vy 5.7l manual one tonner. It took me three years to find a decent one.

Cant wait to start some mods on it, at the moment it only has a box K&N filter and Penrose semi synthetic oils.

The car is booked in getting a soft tonner cover on it and some checker plated under carriage tool boxes. It is a work ute?

Many more mods to come will post a photo later.

Hey just wondering wat springs u used on ur ute (silver Dumped Ve) i have been looking around for some time but cant get a average price on them, i have been quoted anywhere from 400 too 800 installed on ultra lows any advice or recomendations im in Melbourne Eastern suburbs I drive a ve Ute

Go see Black Diamond (John) at Protek tyres next to New Oakleigh Ford at the start of Ferntree Gully Rd. He has his own dumped VE ute and he and his guys there lowered mine and cars/utes of plenty of other people on here. Quality work, competitive prices and no BS advice - definitely worth the trip!! My MY9.5 A6 SSV ute, meaning it has the L76 with AFM (now turned off due to mafless tune). Mods in order of occurrence are:

- HSVi steering wheel and A6 knob (red highlights)
- Beesting aerial (from AussieTone)
- DTM Shine rims with Kumho Ecsta Spt tyres (20x9 with 245 front, 20x10 with 275 rears, supplied by Black Diamond)
- lowered with King SSSL and Monroe GT short body shocks all round (by Black Diamond's boys)
- 28% tint on side windows, 15% rear
- 1 7/8" ceramic coated Pacies, 100cpsi Ballistic cats and 3" KPM s/s system
- flat hardlid, no locks or anything to spoil the lines
- Dus OTR
- Chev's mafless tune

Due to my disabilities I am getting linear actuators (basically battery powered rams) to open/close hardlid and tailgate for me. Wiring is being done for them and my reversing camera tomorrow, actuators for hardlid should arrive very soon and the tailgate one not too far down the track.

The KPM system again sounds great (as it did on my sedan which is why I had to have another) and it, the Dus OTR and Chev's mafless tune all work great together. My A6 SSV sedan was I'm pretty sure the highest bolt-on L98 at Chev's and even though the ute only had 1800km on it when tuned and dynoed it's already within a bee's dick!!

$15,000!!!! How??? Mismatch between plastics and body is a well known issue on all cars to some degree and has been discussed on here before. The worst case I ever saw was on a $100,000+ Lexus at the Melbourne Motor Show last year. No doubt accentuated under the lights but if they can't get it right on an expensive "show" car what hope do Holden have?

See my answers in your General Automotive thread on same. As I said there, PM Black Diamond (John) re price for lowering as he did mine and he and his guys are great. I doubt you'll find anyone doing better for LS1 members.:goodjob:

Have you had your guards rolled?

Yep, rolled to the max and still very, very occasionally scrape with full tank of petrol. Haven't carried any significant load since rolled but assume any half decent load would lead to scraping.

Looks like alot of hard work has been put into these utes! Cant wait to start on mine.. Thanks for sharing.

Its Awesome! love it mate

Finally got some video! :yahoo:

Firstly, lid up and tailgate down. This was done sequentially for the video but in normal operation once the hardlid has gone up a bit the tailgate can be set in motion, thus halving the time required. Given how slow I am it's easily plenty fast enough for me!!

YouTube - Lid up gate down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNrTE873v9g)

The tailgate has had the normal locking mechanism disabled so now operates purely on the actuator. Fantastic for me with my disabilities but may be overkill for most people. However, the automatic hardlid would be great for many people, if nothing else just as a very neat feature very few others have!

Video of the tailgate actuator in operation.

Lost the badges all bar the SS badges. Wish I could get rid of the front one but I don't want a Chev Grille. Can anyone help on this one?

Next up exhuast, CAI and tune. Anyone have a Di Filippo full system that would be kind enough to give me a listen. I've heard Xforece, Pacemaker and VCM suite systems so far. Not a big fan of the Xforce as it gets to high pitched. Loses the V8 bass in my opinion. Don't mind the VCM suite but a lil on the quiet side.

Totally agree! I have the EGR lid & was never really happy - even from the start. But that was all that was available at the time. My nephew actually sold his ute as he really disliked the EGR lid. He ended up trading the ute for the 4 door SSV.

Thanks for all the positive comments boys. Nice to hear it after so much fussing around trying to get the perfect look.

22" ? Well your right everyone goes for the bigger is better look but 22's are simply to big for the VE. One reason being they scrape if you get the car to low and 2 being they dont handle as well as the diameter of the wheel ratio to the radius gets to high. Trying to keep as close as you can to manufacturer diameter is best. The 20" with a 35 profile actually sit 0.9 mm more then the original 19's.

Yeh Holdens single biggest mistake was to take EGR on as an endorsed product. They actually released a slimmer version now that comes out on the 09's. I think they realised there own mistake.

Wheels are from Tyre experts. Paid $2480ish with Hancook's. The Hancooks are now potenza's especially in the wet however for the price you pay they are a pretty good tyre. Personally I'm happy for them to break traction a little easier if I want to.

Nice ride.

speedy cheetahs in 19x8.5 & 9.5 with 245 & 275 Khumo Ecstas tyres

They are the rims I am thinking of changing to. Could you let me know what profile the front and rear tyres are please.

Due to our magnificent pot holed roads up my way I am thinking of changing my 20" x 8" Walkinshaw wheels to these 19" rims but if they have the same profile tyres (35) as my 20" have there is no point and I may go back to the 18" with a 45 profile. Probably cheaper if I could only get the councils to fix the bloody roads.

How do you find the Khumos for 'spirited' driving.

Cheers

35 fronts and 30 for the rears. haven't been able to go for a spirited drive yet as its too low and has the wrong springs and it just scrubs the rears too hard.

Thanks for that. You should look at the Lovells coils with the Lovells eliminator struts and shocks. I haven't gotten around to do a write up on them yet as I only had them fitted a couple of weeks ago but they are magnificent. You get a softer more compliant ride cruising around town then they stiffen up when 'having fun'. Lovells spent over 2 years developing these struts and shocks for the VE and they have sure got it right.

looks good mate are they a lot darker then stock color or just a couple of shades what sort of $ to get it done ??
just a question not car related how do you stop the grass growing up through the pavers on the driveway ours was good for about 5 years now it is a knight mare to stop have tried round up and chlorine and hydrochloric pool acid still grows up about every month

Yes they are a fair bit darker than original. They are darker in person then what the pics show. They are about 1 or 2 shade lighter then the centre of the SS badge. The cost was $400.00 for sanding and paint in 2pac.

Re the pavers, We have a concrete base under the pavers.

Here is my 1956 ute. I have a letter from Holden historian Don Loffler and he states what makes this ute particular IDs even more
valuable to him is that they appear to be a complete set, with original engine and serial numbers.
There are very few FJ Utes around, even in wrecked form, that still have a complete set of original numbers.

G'day all, have owned my SSV ute for nearly 18 months now and still love it as much as the day i picked it up. Was ordered with auto, tinted windows and walkinshaw springs. Have added a HID conversion kit and thats about it, other than keeping it spotless (well, as best as you can for a daily driver). Is such an improvement over previous models i've owned. Still happy that after 40000kms it still has that 'new' feel. It brings a smile to my face every time I drive it.

Thanks to the stainless steel welding skills of Cam (AMADSS) :goodjob: the original tongue and slot hinges have now been changed to normal barrel type hinge arrangements and Big Rob at Chev's was able to change the control unit operation so that one press on the remote sets the lid in motion and one press sets the tailgate in motion. We didn't want that while the original hinges which came with the hardlid were on there as the very first time we tried it the tongue came right out of the slot!! Not nice.............:(

Now I can set the lid going up and tailgate going down even before I've stopped and of course can set off again while they're still closing if I really want to! No doubt that would get some strange looks!!

Did you make the cross pieces or buy the genuine bits. I am talking about the pieces that go across the tray and slip into the molded recess. Thay look great and would be very usefull. I have been going to make something for mine since day 1 yet 13 months later it still has nothing. Cheers. What sort of weight would you guestimate them at. I think I might have a go at knocking up a pine frame and nailing thin ply over it then cover in some type of marine carpet. That should keep it nice and light for my back when I want to pull it out to load something longer in. I take it the mesh up the front is the Holden Calais / HSV boot tidy or wht ever they call them.
Thanks anyway
Cheers

That sounds like a worthwhile project! I shit at guessing weights but thet are quite easy to put in and out, they weight keeps them firmly in place and I can lye stuff ontop of them without damaging them. I also have boot cargo nets hooked across as well to holh the smaller items still.

That sounds like a worthwhile project! I shit at guessing weights but thet are quite easy to put in and out, they weight keeps them firmly in place and I can lye stuff ontop of them without damaging them. I also have boot cargo nets hooked across as well to holh the smaller items still.

Pics when youve finished :smile
Is the cargo net designed to fit the utes too or does it just happen to fit up ok?

Can anyone please post a pic of ss V ute (auto) from the inside at night with all the lights on where the shifting stick is. I think that my light where you put in D or N or R or active select + and - is not working. The dealer told me that it is suppose to be like that. Everything else illuminates (power windows, lock and unlock, ESP) just that part isnt.

Cheers

Front left is George. rear left is Fred. Front right is Sam and can't remember the rear right  Sorry but couldn't resist. They look a bit like the ROH Modena but it's hard to tell from that angle. Check the ROH web site to compare

I just went out and turned my lights on to check (MY09 VE SS Ute). The P,R,N,D, +,- are all lit. Where abouts in Brisbane are you. Try going back to your dealer and checking the lights on a new Ute and if its different to yours drag the service rep up to the new Ute and show him
